About the Author
Ricky W. Griffin holds the Blocker Chair in Business Administration at Texas A&M University. He serves as Executive Associate Dean of the Mays College of Business and as professor of management at Texas A&M University. After receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Houston in 1978, he joined the faculty at the University of Missouri-Columbia before moving to Texas A&M University in 1981. Professor Griffin teaches international management, organizational behavior, human resource management, and general management. He has taught both undergraduate and graduate students, participated in numerous executive training programs, and taught in Europe. A member of the Academy of Management, he has served as division chair of that group's Organizational Behavior division. Professor Griffin has written several successful textbooks, including Management, Organizational Behavior (with Greg Moorhead), and Business (with Ron Ebert). He is currently conducting research on workplace violence in Canada and job design differences and similarities among firms in Japan, Europe, and the United States. Michael Pustay is professor of management at Texas A&M University. He currently serves as associate director of the Center for International Business Studies and as associate director of the Center for International Business Education and Research at Texas A&M. He is the North American editor of the British journal Transport Reviews. Professor Pustay received his B.A. in economics summa cum laude from Washington and Lee University in 1969 and his Ph.D. in economics from Yale University in 1973. He taught at Purdue University and Bowling Green State University prior to joining Texas A&M's business school faculty. Professor Pustay, who has taught international business for 12 years, focuses his teaching and research efforts on international business and business-government relations. His work has appeared in such professional journals as the Journal of Management, Southern Economic Journal, Land Economics, and Transportation Journal. He is currently researching the role of regional trading blocs on the world economy and the impact of domestic economic policies on international competition. Professor Pustay is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the Academy of International Business, the American Economic Association, the Association for Canadian Studies in the United States, and the Transportation Research Forum. He has served as a consultant for a variety of public and private organizations, including the U.S. Department of Transportation, the Small Business Administration, the Civil Aeronautics Board, and Reliant Energy.

Too much self-reference

I had this book for one of my classes at my University this semester, and although the content of the book is concise and updated, nonetheless the authors rely too much on self-reference. The book is written too much from a "USA is superior" perspective. I also found some errors such as translations from other languages that were completely off. If you have to get this book for Intl. Business it is overall a good book, but if you can get a better one, do so.

I am a student at Ferris State. My professor told us that he has had many books in his International Business class and that this one is by far the best and recommended that we keep it when the semester is over rather than sell it. It is very easy to follow and there are tons of interesting stories and graphics that go along with the reading. I like the book and I have been getting A's on all of my quizzes because it really is easy to understand and follow.

Who Are the Real Chosen People?

We last met protagonist, Los Angeles Standard columnist, Alex Marshall, using her sleuthing skills to solve a murder at the National Association of Black Journalists in Plain Brown Wrapper. Author Karen Grigsby Grant unleashes Alex's expertise again with her latest release, Chosen People.

Alex, who has her pulse on the black community of Los Angeles, is assigned to write an article about James Simpson Lee Hastings Jr., the self-proclaimed authority on the Black Bourgeois and author of Chosen People, a book that, depending on who you ask, is either uplifting rich black folk or putting down poorer black folk. Alex knew Hastings had enemies but who would slit his throat at an Eso Wan Book Store signing? She finds herself right smack in the middle of another murder case much to the chagrin of Paul Butler, her out-of-town beau, and her landlady, wealthy matron Sally Ferguson, who have continually admonished her to stay out of trouble, but it seems it just ain't going to happen. Why do these things happen to her? When Alex makes the connection of Hastings' murder to that of an alleged suicide of a wealthy white philanthropist and the vicious attack murder by pit bulls of a prominent African American woman, the plot thickens. All of these victims are only separated by the proverbial six degrees of separation.

From the horse country in Norco of San Diego County, to the streets of South Central Los Angeles to swanky homes in Hancock Park and the Los Feliz Hills and the churches of the Black middle-class, Alex searches for answers. The cast of characters include a pro-black, militant activist turned horse trainer, old money black L.A. and a Jewish socialite. Not only is it a "small colored world", it is a small world, period.

Grigsby Bates peppers her book throughout with phrases, some familiar; some newly coined, a sort of insider's secret language. Besides "small colored world", there is her code for white people, "WP", and the Black Bourgeoisie, "Nigwazeez" and other witty terms. The book, Chosen People, featured in the storyline was an excellent parody of Our Kind of People by Lawrence Otis Graham, the controversial account which took the middle/upper class African American community by storm several years ago. Indeed, as in her last book, Grigsby Bates gives you a glimpse into the black elite of Los Angeles; the class schisms in the African American community, the divisions and tension that exist and how they are exploited. I can hardly wait to see what Alex gets into next.

Exciting and intelligent novel that anyone who enjoys mysteries or fiction will enjoy!

Bates has written another well-paced, well written novel starring Alexa Powell, which I think that many people will like even more than PLAIN BROWN WRAPPER.

CHOSEN PEOPLE is about the upper crust of black society and the african american elite, aptly called the "Chosen People" in some circles. In the book, as in real life, many people think that talking too much about money and class and social status is considered vulgar. Simp, a man who is obsessed with chronicalling the status of the black elite, is unsurprisingly murdered. But no one knows who, among the many people who were clearly disgusted with Simp, could have committed the murder. Alex Powell, reporter turned detective, is trying to write an article about this murder and two others that she intuitively thinks are related.

Perhaps the best thing about this novel is that one of the connections among the characters is their understanding of and committment to improving the black and minority communities and helping those in need. The novel is just as much about political power, cultural identity, ethnic awareness, and community service as it is about social status and violent murders. (After all, there are four murders in the novel!)

I don't want to give away any more of the plot, because I was so surprised and intrigued about the way that the murders were and were not related. I didn't anticipate it at all. Although I am not especially fascinated about this particular segment of black society (I actually find it a little annoying), I honestly think that this angle will make the book more interesting to a lot of people, because most people can only read about the Chosen People, and generally enjoy doing so. I really enjoy reading about Alex, although I got tired of reading about what she was wearing, and I like her. I relate to her, and I look forward to reading about her again.

This is a great summer read, I finished it in about 3 days or so. I really hope it goes to the top of the Essence bestseller list and stays there!

Excellent TV Series...and Book!

When this TV show was originally being aired on ABC back in the early 1970's I was a teenager and never watched it.

But several years later in the late '70's while at college in California, reruns were being shown on some station out there in L.A. - and I became hooked.

The flashback scenes with Masters Po and Kan are FANTASTIC, teach insightful lessons of life to live by, and really are the essence of the show.

Pilato's "Kung-Fu Book of Caine" is an absolutely tremendous supplement to the series, and with all the interesting background information he provides, one can appreciate the show even more.

Yesterday I was even inspired to purchase the recently-released DVD of the first two seasons of "Kung-Fu" here on Amazon [...]

Fans of the series must have this book

The book gives a basic overview of the series without getting bogged downed with actor biographies, it sticks right to the series. Included in the book is an overview of every episode of all three seasons including a plot summary and listing of the main actors. It also explores the relationships of the characters to one another especially Caine and his teachers Master Kan and Master Po. A fantastic book that I used extensively as I rewatched the series (all three of the seasons are now available on DVD). An excellent companion to a fantastic show.

Kung Fu, Caine, and David Carradine

This is a fantastic book if you liked the TV series in the 70's, Kung Fu. Or if you would like to learn about it and then watch the show. The author interviewed Carradine and others, has a summary and comments about each episode. Sometimes the masters are quoted, as flashbacks into Caine's life at the temple--these teachings guide him throughout the series. Many comments add to the understanding of the episode and a section on Kung Fu, the Next Generation, and Kung Fu, the Legend Continues. There are many b/w photos to enjoy.

Thanks Kathi, Getting Rid of Pain Allows Us To Get On With Our Lives

"STOP Back Pain! Kiss Your Back, Neck and Sciatic Nerve Pain Goodbye!" by Kathi Casey, ERYT, CPI is for those of us who are out of shape from daily stressful lives and taking no time for ourselves and for those of us who sit too long at work until we have "computer neck" and more. Her techniques are helpful for those who have just gotten over an illness and require physical rehabilitation and energy rejuvenation. For those like me, Kathi Casey focuses on the causes and methods for relieving sciatic pain. Trained in Yoga, Pilates, Somatics and Acupressure, she provides a variety of photographically illustrated techniques, along with easy instructions, to reduce pain, gain flexibility, and lose weight. She features one important pose that relaxes all of the muscles in our bodies without medication. When using this pose prior to the seven major stretching exercises she proposes, the Yogic strengthening methods become easier to do. She includes stretches for all muscles around your hip, lower back, and buttocks as well a neck-and-shoulder maneuver done with finger pressure on applicable muscle points. . . and more. Deep breathing techniques are used while doing her stretch routine. You can modify and replace certain exercises with alternatives so you can fully participate. I know from my personal experience that lying around waiting for the back pain to go away has never been an option. Prolonged rest only creates more weakness, pain, and stiffness. Taking the initiative to make our lives as muscular-skeletal pain-free as possible is the better solution. That is why I highly recommend "Stop The Back Pain" which provides the basic fundamentals for relieving pain. This book is more user-friendly and motivational than most books on this subject.

Excellent book for any type of back or shoulder pain--readon...

After an auto accident a number of years ago, I was told that I would semi recover, yet still have chronic shoulder problems due to a severe injury to my right trapezoidal shoulder muscle. This muscle was ripped and torn and to this day, I still have on and off chronic pain with it. After trying many types of remedies with not much relief, I bought this book. And after reading this book, I was able to understand the reasons for this type of pain. This book gives suggestions of different types of treatments and remedies.
The chapters in this book that have been of the greatest of help to me are:
Chapter 3: Types of Treatment --- In this chapter the author gives 5 types of treatments for back pain. The first four are more of the holistic nature, which I have found will be more of value to me as conventional medicine has not helped me that much and I choose not to take "heavy medications". The five suggested treatments mentioned in this book are:
1) Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)
2) The Lifeline Technique
3) The Sedona Method
4) The Mind Body Prescription
5) Surgery
In addtion to chapter 3, chapter 4 gives advice on ICE treatment, Heat treatment, patches, creams and gels with wonderful suggestions.
Chapter 5 is another very helpful chapter called "The East West Connection" This chapter gives superb insight for using Yoga, Qigong, Ayurveda, and Healing Touch/Reiki. These types of eastern treatment go back for thousands of years and are become more and more in use in the United States these days as for many people, these methods of healing are quite effective.
Chapter 6 - Stress and Your Back and Neck Pain - explains how stress can bring on pain in the body especially in the neck, shoulder and back! And the author suggests breathing exercises in order to calm both the mind and also the body!
Chapters 8 - 10 have excellent exercises and stretches (some as gentle yoga exercises that I have tried and so far seem to be very effective).
The conclusion of this book has an very through list of resources and a reading list that is very helpful that gives more detailed information regarding health and healing.
The most special aspect that I found in reading this book was the fact that the author herself, has suffered back pain and went on her own healing journey and spent many hours of research in the studies of back-neck-shoulder pain. This book, in my opinion was written not only very well, yet written from the heart! In reading this book, I felt that I had a sympathetic friend beside me explaining about back-neck-shoulder pain. This book, I highly recommend to anyone who suffers from back, neck or shoulder pain!

Finally Getting Relief

I have been suffering for 15 years with pain in my back, buttock, hips, and legs. I have been going to doctors of all kinds and I have received temporary relief. For the past 6 months I have seen a chiropractor and massage therapist and I still have not received relief. Maybe for a day or two and then it was back.

I found this book and decided to give it a try. I am finally getting some relief from techniques suggested from this book. I still have some pain but I am able to stop during the day and get relief from these techniques.

I have discovered that my pain is probably sciatic nerve related and with just the relaxation technique and one of the stretch exercises I am able to get relief and I am able to actually function with daily tasks. I am looking forward to adding other techniques and suggestions from this book and making them part of my daily exercise.

I highly recommend this book. It is a short read yet very informative.

I loved this book!

I appreciate this book so much! It has validated so many of my own feelings as the"non-bio" or "non-genetic" mom and worth the read. I didn't find it depressing at all...but rather, empowering that I am not alone in some of my emotions, fears, hopes and experiences. I would read another book by this author, anytime.

I loved this book because I could relate to so much of it. maybe, as other as said, it shouldnt be a book you read to "get inspiration" to plan bringing a child into the world, but as a lesbian that tried first, losing the pregnancy and then my partner trying and bringing s beautiful son into our lives, I could relate and felt that she was telling MY story! I found her humerus and engaging..and candid...and no, I dont think Id ever consider the Furber method either, but I dont judge her or her partner for trying it! i loved this book and immediately looked for anything else she may have written...i hope she does...

This book was a wonderful read! I love autobiographies and had high hopes for this and I was not disappointed! It was well written and well thought out. As a lesbian in a relationship involving a child that is not mine but who I love as my own I have felt a lot of the same things that the author describes. She words things in such a way that, even if you are not in the situation, you truly understand what she means, how she felt. I read this prior to my current relationship and reread it once in the relationship. I appreciated it both times.
