A straightforward bilingual depiction of the variety of responses to Mexican ``illegals'' by Chicanos already living in Texas. Though her friends' first reaction on seeing Joaqu�n is hostility toward the young mojadito (wetback), Prietita warns them off and befriends him, planning to take him to the herb woman for treatment for the sores he hides under long sleeves. A visit from the Border Patrol hastens the event; the herb woman hides Joaqu�n and his mother until the danger is past, then shows Prietita how to help her new friend. What's special about this simple story is the realism with which the circumstances are presented. The migra represent the law, and there's nothing negative in their depiction (``even'' the Chicano migra laughs when someone makes a joke), but Prietita's kindness is clearly what is valued here. In M‚ndez's powerful mixed-media illustrations, freely drawn graphite lines define the strong, planar faces and the poverty of the surroundings; appropriately, pervasive bleak gray is only somewhat tempered by the hot, bright colors of Latino clothing and the desert. She passed away in 2004.

My son loved the story and it helped him understand at his level (he is four) the complexities of communities that live near a border between two countries and how some people react negatively and some positively to people who immigrate to your own country.

Cultivating Amigos

Friends from the Other Side tells the heart- warming story of two children living on opposite sides of the southern US border who become unlikely friends out of curiosity and circumstance. As the two children become familar with each other, the reader also becomes familiar with cultural differences within the Latino culture itself and with the daily hardships faced by families that live near the border. The book informs and educates the reader about these children's cultural issues by keeping the reader interested in the true to life plot and using realistic culturally significant illustrations. While the story reveals that life is hard for the characters, in the end it remains a story about triumph and friendship. This leaves readers of the same culture with a sense of pride for their heritage and others feeling good after reading the book.

Take the Good with the Bad

I could not honestly say that Friends from the Other Side is an excellent or even a good book. I'm not saying that this book doesn't have any redeeming values because it does contain some very helpful information and lessons. However, I find it difficult to recommend a book wherein some of the book teaches important values and some of it encourages wrong behavior.
Anzaldua, in a very poignant manner, teaches us to be more empathetic toward others, however, at the same time she encourages lawlessness. The author promotes empathy when she has the main character protecting an illegal Mexican family (a boy and his mother) from the border patrol. Although this protection is a compassionate gesture, this is also an unlawful act. Anzaldua is basically giving children the thumbs up to do something wrong as long as something right is being done at the same time.
Another positive lesson that Anzaldua encourages along with a negative lesson is in the area of prejudice. The author does a great job exhorting us to be aware of and overcome our prejudices when she has the main character, a Mexican-American girl, develop a frienship with a Mexican boy who is hated because he is different. However, Anzaldua encourages prejudice later on in the book when she separates the Mexicans from the gringos in the retort, "Yes, I saw some [Mexicans] over there [on the gringo side of town]. The author encourages animosity of the races when she adds laughter to this comment. How can Anzaldua ask us to eliminate our prejudices while she encourages them?
This book has so much to teach us about the Mexican culture and can teach us valuable lessons but, I cannot honestly say it is a book I would suggest children to read. I cannot promote good with bad.

About the Author
R. Stephen Berry is a James Franck Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus and member of the Department of Chemistry faculty at the University of Chicago. He received his BA and PhD from Harvard University. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a Foreign Member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences, and has received among various other accolades the Alfred P. Sloan Fellow (1962-66). Professor Berry's research explores the topics of structures, properties and dynamics of clusters and biopolymers, dynamics of few-body systems, and finite-time thermodynamics.

Joshua Jortner is a Professor Emeritus at the School of Chemistry at Tel Aviv University. He received his Master of Science in Physical Chemistry and his PhD from the Hebrew University in 1960. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and a member of the American Chemical Society, and has received a myriad of awards and honorary degrees. His research includes the exploration of the phenomena of energy acquisition, storage and disposal in isolated molecules, clusters, condensed phases and biophysical systems.

Clear, and comprehensive, and well organized

This textbook is one of the best text in Physical Chemistry in the modern time. Although not a classic, it is well organized and pulls all the important information and problems from a variety of sources. The writing is clear and logical for both undergraduate and graduate students alike.

The worst book ever

This is the worst physical chemistry book ever used. Luckily, for most, it is rarely used precisely because it is so terrible, especially as an undergrad text. Maybe this is a good textbook for graduate-level studies or, as my professors use it, as a reference text for someone who has a PhD in the topics already.

SUMMARY OF GIANT FLAWS:
- Typos in figures, equations, text, etc.
- Ambiguity and errors in wording (the difference between speed and velocity means a lot in solving homework problems!)
- Math comes out of nowhere with no justification
- Extremely wordy and unclear
- No example problems - a tragedy for use at the undergrad level
- Chapter and section are not listed at the top of each page, so have fun memorizing that Ch29 is on Dense Phases, not Kinematics!
- Information needed to solve problems (i.e. specific heats, etc) is often not even found within the text
- It is the weight of a small child

I would like to share with you a small sample of the reviews of the book from course evaluations from my last quarter of Thermodynamics:

"Berry, Rice, and Ross was the worst textbook I have ever used, in any class, ever. It actually decreased my understanding of the material every time I tried to read it. The text reads like it was translated badly from German--horribly convoluted and unclear. The entire thing was rife with errors--important equations would stated incorrectly, captions to figures made no sense, homework problems would refer to the wrong equations/figures, etc. There were no example problems, variables were poorly defined (you would have to search through huge paragraphs to find out what theta* was, and even once you found the reference you would still be confused), and stupidest of all, the chapter and section numbers were not listed at the top of each page, so that you were never sure what chapter you were in as you flipped through the book."

"BRR was the worst chemistry text I have ever had. NEVER AGAIN should it be used for this course, or any other undergraduate thermo course, for that matter."

"Physical Chemistry, by Berry, Rice, and Ross. Frankly, the book was not very useful at all. It was incredibly dense, not concise at all, and frankly sometimes downright confusing. I feel like some of the problems from this book were more difficult because you had no idea what they were asking than because of the science involved."

If you randomly picked a book from the Library of Congress catalogue, it would be more effective at teaching thermodynamics than BRR. It is incomprehensible gibberish, with a healthy dose of typos to further prevent learning."

"The text was awful (authors: BBR,Berry and Rice?). It was expensive, heavy, and terribly written. There were mistakes throughout the text, which made understanding the material only that much more difficult. Nothing was explained well and the limited derivations of equations were stilted and useless. It was really frustrating to have to spend so much money on something so unhelpful and even detrimental to my learning."

Stellar Introduction to the Eastern Mind-Set

Bresnan's Awakening is an excellent introduction to the Eastern religions and philosophies of Hinduism, Buddhism, Shintoism, Taoism, and Confucianism. The text is very readable, and Bresnan often tries to correlate appropriate Eastern doctrines with similar Judeo-Christian themes in order to enhance the reader's understanding.
Instead of focusing on external and exoteric religious themes, such as rituals, traditions, and the like, Bresnan uses a more theosophical approach which brings to light the ideas that encompass Eastern religions and ideologies. I would wholeheartedly recommend this book for anyone who has a budding interest in Eastern thought but has a theological IQ that does not extend east of the Arabian peninsula.

Very useful.

I used this as a substitute for the 4th edition, and it works just fine. The only issue I had was trying to match up the questions that are in the 3rd edition with the 4th edition at the end of every chapter. The best way I managed to do this was go to coursesmart and do a free trial of the 4th edition, and highlight all the questions in the 3rd edition that match up to the 4th edition. I'd say about 97% of all the questions are exactly the same, but some questions are actually shorter in the 4th edition than in the 3rd. Overall, I recommend this to students who are looking to save. The information is exactly the same in the 3rd as in the 4th.

This book opened my eyes in a lot of ways to the core of Eastern Philosophy. This book gives the clearest and best explanations of Hinduism, Buddhism, and Chinese thought that I have read. I highly recommend this book to everyone who would like to get an introduction into Eastern thought.

Avoid! This is not the book you want

This book is utter garbage. I wish I could give it negative stars, one is entirely too many. The great reviews are almost entirely bogus. Investigate and you will find that almost ALL these reviews are from reviewers who have exclusively rated other crummy books, and rated them highly. Do you know what nobody needs? A book about exercise and stretching with no images or diagrams whatsoever. I never review things, but felt obligated to let people know that this book isn't worth a nickel.

At first I thought I was going to read yet another "exercise book", but soon enough I understood that it was a lot more than that. The book really goes deep about foam-rolling and describes to detail every piece of information necessary to be a professional "foam-roller". From where to buy and how to choose the best foam roller for you, to completely putting it to practical use and transform your day by day workout routine.
Overall, this book is amazing. Highly recommended. Don't think twice...

She has had a long and distinguished career as Administrator and Educator at this institution, having served as the Founding Dean of the University of Vermont College of Nursing, USA and Health Sciences and as Director of the Holly and Robert Miller Caring for Nurses Initiative. In her Administrative role at this institution, Dr. Rambur directed the implementation of important financial initiatives, and established an interdisciplinary education model, among other achievements. She has been a member of the Board of Trustees, Fletcher Allen Healthcare System and has chaired several healthcare finance reform committees for the state of North Dakota, USA. Understanding care delivery financing - strategic imerative for all health professionals.

This is an important piece of work on one of the major issues driving health care delivery today - the cost of health care and the responding changes in how health care delivery is financed. Dr. Rambur has written an excellent review of how today's health care delivery is being financed, the major policy discussions around that financing, and the systems of financing that will drive policy decisions into the future. The major concern about this book is that it is titled as a work for nurses. In fact, this is a book that all health professional students should use to help them understand how the care they deliver will be financed and how it will shape the expectations for their accountability in providing that care. Well done.
