Hastily cobbled together

Having reached past page 100 of the book, I feel compelled to pause for a moment and offer my review of it. If my opinion changes somewhat later, I'll update it in consequence.

Obviously, this book was hastily published, in an attempt to be the first one out, and is sorely lacking proofreading and coordination between the authors. Following are a few issues I personally found grating.

The text is adequate but verbose (some topics are needlessly broached several times) and all over the place (topics are started in a chapter, continued in another, and neither chapter provides a comprehensive picture of the functionality they're dealing with). Depth is inconsistent: Chapter 3, which is entirely devoted to explaining the request processing lifecycle, glosses over how navigating between different pages interacts with the lifecyle of those pages but at the same time Chapter 2 feels necessary to explain that you should use 'localhost' in your browser to point to a locally deployed application.

Some sections are directly lifted from the previous edition: I suppose there are no differences between the Expression Language in version 1.2 and version 2.0, but I'd like at least an acknowledgment instead of a diagram that only shows JSF versions reaching 1.2. Another example is that, suddenly, the text makes reference to JSP as the view definition language, and you find yourself wondering whether that section you're reading is still relevant in a Facelets world.

Even better (well, worse) is to see an "Expert Group Insight" box praising the MethodBinding class, without even making a note that the class is now deprecated (as a matter of fact, MethodBinding was *already* deprecated in JSF 1.2); if I tell you that the surrounding text makes no mention of that class, since MethodExpression has long replaced its functionality, you can see how those recurring little things can be annoying.

The examples are both repetitive and mostly useless. Some examples don't even match the text that refers to them (the command button action and value attribute values are repeat offenders there)

At times, the book feels like it was published without the authors' approval: Chapter 4, in its 10-page glory, is woefully insufficient as a coverage of the Facelets language (the non-templating Facelets tags have 1/2 page to share between them), and Chapter 17 (referred to in Chapter 2 and Chapter 5), while minor, is completely missing (and admitting that omission is sadly the only thing in the online errata at the moment)

Verdict

What I really expected from this book, was both a complete, integrated picture of JSF 2.0, and a sense of the best practices to use when developing a JSF application, but sadly this is not the book for it. At the very least, wait for a revised edition, so that they can fix the most glaring mistakes. But I'd still look somewhere else if I had to pick a JSF book again in a year.

It is just a reference book

I was attracted by the statements on the cover of this book.
But the content I found is equal to online Java EE tutorial + JSF 2.0 specification.

There are a lot of new features in JSF 2.0 and the authors introduce them well, but often without context. I mean I want to see a real problem that is easily and nicely can be solved by using the feature, what I see instead is just a synthetic "hello world" examples. This is one of the reasons why new comers programmers write inconsistent code: they use wrong tools in a wrong places.

There are not so many real examples as the book claims it has. There are no custom components created and just composite ones. I mean there are no Calendar component, fancy button component, accordions, etc. Without those components it is hard to call a site "RIA".
And as I understand JSF 2.0 is for Rich Internet Applications.
The "Virtual Trainer Application" sample (which is the only one complete and real) does not show the Full power of JSF 2.0. I mean I can implement the same application by using JSP 2.1 or with Struts 2.0, or with SpringMVC -- any MVC capable framework can do the same job with almost the same effort. So why should I use JSF? Ok, there is Validation which is greatly highlighted, but I wanted to see more.

Authors constantly says that we should not use that technique or this code in the real world example. Look, why I then bought this book?
For simplicity authors remove some JEE aspects, like EJB, but what they do instead is create their own things which kind of replace for EJB. They shows the real code and asks not to use it. What is the reason then? I am sure junior programmers won't check EJB and just will use the code authors provide.

After reading this book I still can't answer the questions I was interested in.
Some of them are:
what is the JSF 2.0 way to expose, let say, JQueryUI controls as JSF components?
how to create table component which will load data lazily?
how to implement two version of the page one for Computer's Browser and one for Mobile's one?

And there is no word about CDI (Context & Dependency Injection) + JSF 2.0 integration.

One of the worst Java books I have read ever

I am fortunate to have prior experience using JSF but I assume this book is going to be very hard to follow for developers new to this topic. And it is very verbose and still lacking for developers that have already used older versions of JSF. The chapter on Facelets is a joke. I haven't completed the book yet though. So far it has been a disappointment. It is a very incomplete reference.

From simple beginnings to the elaborate end

"Drawing Animals" by Hugh Laidman

Laidman takes 1 or 2 pages to devote to drawing a single animal, such as a horse. The page will have about 9 illustrations of the horse, starting with the most generalized rough shapes with line and oval, and each subsequent drawing is a refinement of the first rough sketch. I like the idea.

But what if a timid beginner feels overwhelmed by this method? That's where the good news comes in. Author Hugh Laidman offers 5 pages at the beginning of the books with simpler, more elementary animal shapes composed of spheres of various shapes. It's a nice methodology of assisting the student overcome his "jitters".

Actually, there are quite a few pages of horses, mixed in with the tigers, elephants geese, dogs, cats, sheep, cows, gorillas, baboons, leopards, lions and eagles, and other creatures.

At first glance, some of these sequences might appear intimidating, but if one looks throughout the book, it is shown that Laidman gives many rougher and simpler sketches for every creature he shows. Laidman's final sketches are of an "expert" quality.

As a Dover edition, this book comes at a bargain price. I do recommend it.

About the Author

Ashfaque Ahmed obtained his bachelor of engineering degree from the National Institute of Technology, Raipur, India, in 1988 and his MBA in marketing management from Indira Gandhi National Open University in 1997. He has more than 25 years of experience in the field, including in the steel industry and software application development. He started his career as a management trainee in Steel Authority of India Limited, the largest company in the steel industry in India. He learned production management, inventory management, and marketing management in the Indian steel industry. Later he moved to software industry as a programmer analyst and worked for a Canadian software company based in Montreal. In the software industry, he learned about software programming and how software helps run a brick-and-mortar business. Then he moved to software testing and worked as software testing manager and software project manager.

In 2005, he learned SAP materials management (SAP MM) module and became a SAP MM consultant. Since then, he has been working with Global Steel Holdings Limited and SAP Nigeria for implementing SAP solutions for their customers. In his career as SAP MM consultant, he has worked on some challenging assignments that involve the implementation of variants of standard business scenarios in the context of local country-specific customizations of SAP MM features.

Reflections on Leadership

It would be difficult to engage in a serious study of effective leadership without encountering the writings of Daniel Goleman on Emotional Intelligence and Social Intelligence. When it comes to leadership, IQ and technical skills are threshold requirements. "But when it comes to predicting who amongst those highly intelligent people will emerge as the most productive, emotional intelligence increasingly matters." "When I compared star performers with average ones is senior leadership positions, nearly 90 percent of the competencies that distinguished outstanding performers were attributable to EI factors, rather than purely cognitive abilities."

Mr. Goleman has put together a collection of his previous works about EI and supplemented them with current articles and insights to give an up to date summary of his best thinking on what makes a successful leader.

I have read many of Mr. Goleman's previous books. There are some distinct advantages to What Makes a Leader. For starters, it is short and easy to read. In his earlier books, Mr. Goleman spent a lot of time establishing his theories and providing research. This book is a collection of articles and blog posts and they are much more precise. The writing is tighter and there is more emphasis on the lessons than on the science behind the lessons. So if you are looking for a quick and easy way to get the very best of Daniel Goleman's insights on leadership, this is it.

The book is full of insights on what makes an outstanding leader. Mr. Goleman has identified four components of EI and provides guidance in how to develop those traits. They are: Self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy and social skills. Mr. Goleman provides an in-depth discussion of each component and explains how to improve your EI. He also gives a set of questions that will help you evaluate your EI.

Another valuable lesson is the six types of leadership approach, examining the components of each style, how and when to use each type. The types are: Authoritative, Affiliative, Democratic, Pacesetting, Coaching and Coercive. Most leaders utilize one or more styles, often moving seamless from one style to another.

There is an excellent coaching model in the Chapter titled Primal Leadership. Here Mr. Goleman walks the reader through an exercise to uncover gaps between where you are and where you want to be and provides tools that will help bridge that gap.

He finishes the book by exploring the importance of focus in our work and lives. As Yoda said, "Your focus is your reality." Most people understand the internal and external focus (inner and outer in the book) but Mr. Goleman introduces a third area of focus - other. Those leaders with a high degree of Other focus are quick to read the mood of groups, to grasp the unspoken feelings of others.

This book is an excellent resource for anyone wishing to improve their understanding of leadership. The book is relatively short and a quick read. It is full of actionable concepts. The information brings together some 15 years of the best thinking from Mr. Goleman and a number of other authorities on the subject of leadership.

The "green thumb" needed to "grow" leaders

My wife is a gourmet chef and what she demonstrated again last evening is that a great dinner depends almost entirely on three key factors: the raw materials, knowledge (the "what"), and skill (the "how"). I thought about this as I was reading Daniel Goleman's recently published anthology of essays that had originally appeared in various business journals, including HBR.

His key point - and I agree - is that, when it comes to predicting who amongst highly intelligent people will emerge as the most productive, "the best team member or an outstanding leader, emotional intelligence increasingly matters. That's because emotional intelligence skills - how well we manage ourselves and our relationships - are the skills that distinguish outstanding performers. And the higher one goes in an organization, the more EI matters in distinguishing the most effective leaders."

The essays in this volume reflect Goleman's own personal growth and professional development during a remarkably productive 15-year period, from "What Makes a Great Leader" (HBR, November/December 1998) to "The Leader's Triple Focus" (adapted from Focus: The Hidden Driver of Excellence, published by Harper in 2013). Over time, he has increased his knowledge and strengthened various skills to produce work of increasingly higher quality and value while nourishing various relationships with his associates, clients, and students. I am especially impressed by the more direct and more personal rapport with his reader that Goleman has developed over the years. I am among countless others who felt that, while reading Focus, for example, he had written it specifically for me. Only someone with highly developed emotional intelligence could accomplish that.

There are no head-snapping revelations in this collection of essays written for HBR and other business journals, nor does Goleman make any such claim. For more than two decades, the greatest value of the information, insights, and counsel that he provides is that - together - they help to establish a rock-solid foundation which to develop increasingly stronger management as well as leadership skills. The word "increasingly" indicates my conviction that executive development is a never-ending process, not an ultimate destination.

I am among those who have read all of the books from which these essays have been extracted. (Indeed, in some instances, the book was based on an essay.) I re-read them in this volume and, again, found something I had missed during a previous reading. I now presume to make three suggestions. First, consider this volume as an excellent gift to those who are now preparing for a career in business or who have only recently embarked on one. Also, if you are a supervisor with several direct reports entrusted to your care, consider purchasing a copy for each and thereby nourish their aspirations to lead others.

Finally, check out LEADERSHIP: A MASTER CLASS with Daniel Goleman. This is a set of DVDs based on his conversations with Daniel Siegel, ("The Leader's Mind"), Warren Bennis ("The Socially Intelligent Leader"), Erica Ariel Fox (Getting Beyond Yes"), Caludio Fern�ndez-Ar�oz ("Talent Strategy"), Bill George ("Authentic Leadership"), Teresa Amabile ("Create to Innovate"), Howard Gardner ("Today's Leadership Imperative"), and George Kohlrieser ("High Performance Leadership"). A bonus interview of Peter Senge is included.

It is a valuable book to me also for development management involving international teams spread over many countries.

The predecessor to Helen Macdonald's H Is for Hawk, T. H. White's nature-writing classic, The Goshawk, asks the age-old question: What is it that binds human beings to other animals? White, author of The Once and Future King and Mistress Masham's Repose, was a young writer who found himself rifling through old handbooks of falconry. A particular sentence - "the bird reverted to a feral state" - seized his imagination, and, White later wrote, "A longing came to my mind that I should be able to do this myself. The word 'feral' has a kind of magical potency which allied itself to two other words, 'ferocious' and 'free.'" Immediately White wrote to Germany to acquire a young goshawk. Gos, as White named the bird, was ferocious and Gos was free, and White had no idea how to break him in beyond the ancient (and, as it happened, long superseded) practice of depriving him of sleep, which meant that he, White, also went without rest. Slowly man and bird entered a state of delirium and intoxication, of attraction and repulsion that looks very much like love.

White kept a daybook describing his volatile relationship with Gos - at once a tale of obsession, a comedy of errors, and a hymn to the hawk. It was this that became The Goshawk, one of modern literature's most memorable and surprising encounters with the wilderness - as it exists both within us and without.
