A very practical guide

Mr. Ferry has produced a handbook for training Hotel Butlers that can be used in a wide variety of hospitality venues from large properties with numerous suites served by butlers to smaller boutique resorts and spas offering butler service in very intimate settings.

The objective of this manual in all of these situations is to train and promote great service and inspire butlers with attitude, skills and focus to wow guests as though they were being served in their own homes.

First there is the discussion of butlers in a historical context and their evolution from servants to professionals over the years. The hotel butler is in a different role than the single family butler because multiple guests replace single employer as the central focus of service. The purpose of the butler remains the same " to smooth the lives of those who he or she serves" Understanding this role is key, and Mr. Ferry then moves on to the skills that enable the butlers to execute their mission with efficiency.

Skills involved include how to handle many of the more common situations that arise in terms of etiquette and navigating the "sticky wickets" or complicated situations that often arise. Then there is excellent discussion of some of the systems that are used for butlers to communicate effectively- the white board, the passport, the radio systems and protocols. Packing and unpacking, shoe care, laundry, setting the table and serving the proper English tea are but some of the many details of the butler trade that are covered in expert fashion.

The book ends up with a wide range of check lists that are wonderful templates ready to be customized to the particular hospitality location. Guest Room readiness checklist, list for organizing a dinner party and a guest record form are just a few of the great organizing tools that Mr. Ferry has provided.

Great how-to book to govern your data assets

I was recently put in charge of data quality at our rapidly growing 200-person online business. As a result I've done a lot of online research on the subject and purchased several books. IMO, Ladley's book is the best reference on the market. You won't find a lot of fluff in the book. But, you will find a lot of step-by-step advice on how to get started, how the program should be organized, how to define the scope of the project, key roles to make it happen, etc.

The book is great for both large and small companies.

If you are an executive and want the overview of how it should work and should be staffed, read the first 4 chapters (out of 14). If you are the guy or gal that needs to make it happen, read the entire book.

While the text content was excellent, well-organized and thorough, the latter half of the book had inconsistencies between the main text and supporting materials located in the back of the book. I didn't give it 5 stars because some sections of the Phase Activity Outputs table data found in Index 1 do not easily match back to Chapter Activity Summary Table Outputs for corresponding Phase Activities. Took more manual reconciliation and reordering to figure out what was what than I think should be encountered in a published text of this caliber. Also, the book illuminates the deficiencies in DMBOK related to organizational change management, but would have really liked a more detailed look into the change management framework John employs within DG.

Insightful book

This is a great book to help with understanding how EIM relates to the concepts of data governance, and in turn how it relates to concepts like Master Data Management and Business Intelligence projects.

The only criticism I have is that the charts and tables in the Kindle version scales very poorly, making styding them a bit of a chore. This is important since a lot of the practical advice (which is really good), is not easily consumed.

However, I would still recommend this book to gain better understanding of data governance and related concepts, and find out more about how to establish data governance culture within an organisation.

I have completely enjoyed the Love Comes Softly series since I first read it several years ago.

Sadly, I am returning this particular 4-in-1 book because it's too large and heavy for me to hold comfortably. I should've paid less attention to the low price and more attention to the size and weight listed in the description.

The Essentials series continues, this time for WAIS-IV. Comprehensive, thoughtful, and based on good theory and research, the authors cover every aspect of WAIS-IV construction, administration, and interpretation. PLUS... there is a bonus this time.... a CD with software to do all the STEPS calculations for you! Wish we could get this for WISC-IV. Highly recommended for clinicians using the WAIS-IV.

WAIS-IV assessment book helpful, somewhat

I ordered this book hoping to get assistance in making sense of the large amount of data generated by administering and scoring the test, following my first administration. One attraction of the book was that it comes with a CD program that interprets the data, once you have calculated and entered the standard scores. I wrongly assumed that the program would do automatically what the test manual prescribes for hand-scoring. (The publisher's available scoring program is rather expensive for the number of tests I administer.)
I had some difficulty opening the program, getting error messages. I contacted Wiley IT support and they were helpful in solving the problem.
I had started writing my report before I received the book. When I ran the test scores through the program, for comparison, I soon realized that some of the interpretation methodology differed from that described in the WAIS-IV manual. For example, the criteria for determining if there are significant differences between subtests within an index, (which according to the book renders an index "not interpretable") are different. The method in the book has a higher numeric level required for significant differences.
That led to some confusion on my part on how to and whether to combine the two approaches or stick with one, which I finally resolved by determining which was more helpful for making recommendations for the client.
If you are comfortable with the various statistical underpinnings of test interpretation and want to do in-depth interpretation, you will probably like this book. It offers an alternative, 5-index approach called the Keith method, in addition to the WAIS 4-index approach. It also offers additional clinical clusters based on various theoretical models of intelligence.
