Zarafa: The Giraffe Who Walked to the King, by Judith St. George

Zarafa is a beautiful and gentle giraffe . . . so wonderful, in fact, that the ruler of Egypt offers her as a gift to the king of France! But how to get her there? Why, she sails up the Nile by felucca, crosses the sea by brigantine, and, yes, walks the last five hundred miles to Paris. People love it. And they love her, meeting and greeting her along the way, cheering her on. Afterward, the grateful French king places Zarafa in his own royal garden, where all of Paris comes to visit and love her. Judith St. George (So You Want to Be President?) brings this amazing?but true?journey to life with help from the whimsical art of Britt Spencer.

From Booklist
St. George recounts a true story of a giraffe’s journey from infancy to fame in this handsome picture book. In 1824 the viceroy of Egypt, wanting the two countries to be good friends, decided to give the king of France a giraffe, an animal of unimaginable exoticism at the time. The story follows Zarafa as she sailed on a tiny boat down the Nile to Alexandria, boarded a much bigger ship to cross the Mediterranean, and then walked more than 500 miles with her beloved handlers to be presented to the king. Although there isn’t much drama other than charting Zarafa’s moods, which, according to St. George, were almost uniformly cheerful, Zarafa’s sensational impact on the people around her is readily apparent on every page.   Spencer’s winsome artwork, though verging on stereotype at times, is the highlight here, with scenes of cheering and amazed crowds surrounding the placid and magnificent Zarafa. Even if giraffes are ho-hum for some children,  the sheer exuberance caused by the animal’s spectacle at every step of her journey is undeniably infectious. Grades 1-3. --Ian Chipman

Review
In her trademark witty yet informational style, St. George relates this epic journey with a jaunty text and quick, parenthetical quips. ---Kirkus Reviews

A wonderful story ...
By Susie
I use Five in a Row curriculum with my daughter in our home school. One of the books that is suggested is The Giraffe that Walked to Paris, which is a wonderful book. I was able to check it out of our library via Inter Library Loan, but was not able to obtain a copy of my own as it has been out of print for quite some time, Folks were asking $100 on average (I see they have come down now). I was pleasantly surprised when I saw Zarafa printed! This is the same story (told just a bit differently) about the same giraffe and the same journey (which is true, buy the way). The pictures are lovely too. It is not a perfect fit for our FIAR studies, but it is a nice substitute. I have no problem recommending this lovely book to anyone.

I love this story
By Sig Johannsen
I love this story, and the map inside is very handy for showing the route from Egypt to Paris. The illustrations reminded me of old EC comics.

Great book
By Margo Carlson
Our whole family loves this book about the real giraffe who walked to Paris. It is an amazing story. I recently saw a French collection of white on white quilts from the 1700's, one of which had a giraffe stitched into the pattern!

Vanity Fair 100 Years: From the Jazz Age to Our Age, by Graydon Carter

Vanity Fair 100 Years showcases a century of personality and power, art and commerce, crisis and culture—both highbrow and low. From its inception in 1913, through the Jazz Age and the Depression, to its reincarnation in the boom-boom Reagan years, to the image-saturated Information Age, Vanity Fair has presented the modern era as it has unfolded, using wit, imagination, peerless literary narrative, and bold, groundbreaking imagery from the greatest photographers, artists, and illustrators of the day. This sumptuous book takes a decade-by-decade look at the world as seen by the magazine, stopping to describe the incomparable editor Frank Crowninshield and the birth of the Jazz Age Vanity Fair, the magazine’s controversial rebirth in 1983, and the history of the glamorous Vanity Fair Oscar Party.
With its exhaustive sweep, visual impact, and time-capsule format, Vanity Fair 100 Years is the book everyone will want in 2013. Praise for Vanity Fair 100 Years:

“The book is a stunning artifact that begets staring, less for the words and publishing industry than as an exercise in visual storytelling reflected through the prism of society and celebrity. The best photographers, the best designers, the best illustrators all came together over Vanity Fair’s contents, and the book unfolds in page after page of stunningly rendered images, some iconic and some that never even ran.” —New York Times Book Review

A Perfect gift
By R. Mirisch
This is a marvelous publication. It's not the kind that you sit down and read cover-to-cover. Rather you leisurely flip through it and find amazing articles about whatever year or person or fad you may be interested in. It holds endless fascination with its wealth of photographic material and accompanying narratives which entertain and inform. A perfect gift for a VF lover. I bought it for my wife.

Made for a great gift
By Laura Sutherland
The Vanity Fair 100 Years book was purchased as a Christmas present for my sister - it was on her wish list - and she was thrilled. The book itself is very heavy due to the glossy paper which holds the full colour images, and yet it arrived undamaged in excellent shipping packaging. Plus it was shrink-wrapped inside so there was no damage to the binding from it sliding around inside the box. It's an oversized book, and definitely designed to sit flat on a coffee table. It could stand on a shelf, but care must be given to protect the binding from the weight of the pages. The material contained in the book consumed my sister for hours after opening it, and she still loves to pick it up and browse through it on a daily basis. A good choice for any Vanity Fair fan.

Poor Quality! Beware!
By C. Ridge Swindle
Although the price was right, the contents were not. First, the quality of the paper is unforgivable. Secondly, itching for a taste of nostalgia for a century's worth of photos, too many modern ones were used. It would have been better to buy a book of Vanity Fair art rather than magazine content. I don't regret owning the book, but, the quality of paper alone would keep me from gifting or sharing. As an avid reader of the magazine for most of my life, this book is grossly disappointing.

Unbelievable!
By L. Hunt
I was looking for something that would tighten my stomach and pelvic floor and upon research ran across Callanetics. I decided to purchase this dvd (in 2012), and got unbelievable results. Such as life, got busy, quit doing the work outs and forgot the dvd altogether. I have always been fairly petite, and noticed I started ballooning out in all the wrong places arms, gut, cellulite covered my legs ect., ect. I started using weights and doing tiny are circles to try to tighten my jiggly arms back up. Some times doing up to 300 rotations (150 forward & 150 in reverse). Nothing, nada, zilch! Well I ran across my Callanetics dvd and decided to start back doing them again. So I did, and let me tell you, My arms tightened back up to pre-pregnancy size (keep in mind from my very 1st child 10 years ago, I have 3 total)! My husband went out of town for 5 days, came home and asked me, "What happened to you? You look amazing!" It made me feel great. My jeans are looser, my tops are looser, my stomach is flatter. The cellulite on my legs was horrible, and I'm not talking about those people who say, "I'm covered in cellulite", then you have to break out the magnifying glass to find it. My cellulite woes were/are legit. We're talking about hail damage here... golf ball size hail damage. My children ask me what happened to my legs, if I was in an accident. I laugh and tell them no, it's just a part of getting older. Anyway I have done 5 hours so far and it is just about gone on my quads. My hamstrings, were still working out. I am hoping, by ordering the Super Callanetics, it will clear the hail damage on the backside on up. I hear the Super C. is more advanced and double the moves. I am excited and looking forward to it (should arrive in a week). My rump, it's always been saggy, even when I ran track in high school and did weight lifting- ugh...WHAT GIVES?! One friend told me when I tanned to put a tooth pick between my butt and legs to hold it up to get some sun under there -yeah that saggy. I never tried it, but I probably could have carried money, or pencils or whatever back there. It was like it's own personal compartment. At 33 years old, for the 1st time in my life it is lifting up like Callans! Yay to perky deriairs! I am telling you who gives a flip about the music, the hair, the leotards? If you get results, you get results! Stop waisting time and buy the dvd, you wont' regret it!

Impeccable instruction
By Samyama
This book is a life-changer. I borrowed it from the library & ordered my own copy the same day. I love Callan's teaching style & technique. I've also added 4 of her dvd's to my collection. This book is comprehensive & could work as a stand-alone Callanetics resource. The 10 years younger dvd (the counterpart to this book) gives good visuals of the nuances of the movements with Callan teaching every-day students. (The book is more comprehensive--the video augments the book.) The Super Callanetics dvd adds advanced moves to the one-hour routine presented in the book & another opportunity to glean subtleties in proper form as Callan demonstrates the moves in the beginning & then proceeds to instruct master practitioners as they complete the sequence. This book alongside Super Callanetics (excellent instruction & progressive movements) are my favorite & most referred to Callanetics resources. I'm thankful for Callan, Callanetics & the clarity & grace with which it is conveyed.

Update: I added the Super Callanetics book to my collection. (It's out of print & available used though amazon.) It's a real treasure. I think it's the best Callanetics resource for one's evolving practice. It contains helpful suggestions for each exercise to achieve proper form & make each exercise more challenging or less challenging. It also includes tips Callan used in her own personal practice. After doing the sequence over a dozen times, I know it by heart & enjoy it as a moving meditation first thing in the morning. I like keeping the Super Callanetics book & a timer alongside when I practice.

MOST EXCELLENT
By K.A.
I have since moved on from this workout because it got too easy, but when I first started I could not lift my left up to do the exercise - the sitting one! I worked at it and after several sessions, I quickly lifted and lost inches in all the right places. It was shocking really, one day when I put my jeans on and my rear was way up there! This is the best video to start with if you are a newbie. It works and it works fast! And, it's relaxing at the same time. I got much more limber and flexible doing this workout. It was a life changer for sure. It is effective - the elliptical and stairmasters are a complete waste of time.

A window on yesterday--and today
By Joseph Fusco
Janet Flanner was amazing in her insights in her own words as well as quoting others. I think one would be hard pressed to find someone with greater perception of the France of that era. This work also is a great help in understanding the France of today.
For example, Flanner quotes Maurice Duverger, a professor at the Sorbonne in an interview in the magazine L'Express on pp. 281-282: "Nothing is stupider than stylish anti-Americanism. But at the base of it all there is, just the same, a real question. America is a very different society from ours. It was built by pioneers who for their cultural baggage had the bible and a sense of adventure." Duverger goes on to compare the Soviet Union and the U.S.A. as two evolving societies and concludes that in the long run the U.S.A. will be the greater threat to the French way of life.
Flanner concludes: "Painful as many of Professor Duverger's conclusions are for many Americans, he has academically touched on basic, alarming truths for many of the French, who, even in their awareness, seem unable to do anything about them except complain--while continuing their American way of life " la franaise."
I find that to be true in Paris of 2001. I cannot recommend this book enough. Janet Flanner was truly remarkable.

C'est superbe
By Scott MacLeod
Flanner (nom de plume: Gent), a former New Yorker essayist and who lived in Paris for many years, describes the cultural and social life of Paris in the 50s and 60s. She pens wonderful glimpses into what Parisians were thinking, feeling, and doing -Paris' life, wine, art, literary insights, and ways of thinking. C'est magnifique.

Review
'This book is subtitled "a practical guide for directors and managers" and while it certainly is that it's something else as well: a good read...dealing with fraud is often a matter of crisis management. With this guide, it needn't be.' (The CA, January 2013) 'Well written with many interesting anecdotes.' (Supply Business, January 2013) 'Steve Giles' credentials to write this comprehensive and entertaining guide to managing fraud risk are unimpeachable' (Gazette, January 2013) 'The keynote of the book is practicality - assessing risk and taking proportionate action...an excellent compendium for all managers' (Professional Manager, May 2013)

From the Back Cover

Fraud can severely damage an organisation’s profitability and reputation. The risks have never been higher than they are in today’s turbulent economic times, yet many organisations continue to take a reactive approach, thinking about fraud only once it has occurred. As a result they are forced to deal with the consequences, often having to act quickly and under conditions of extreme stress, leading to poor outcomes.

In Managing Fraud Risk: A Practical Guide for Directors and Managers Steve Giles lays out the modern, strategic approach to the problem. He explains corporate fraud theory (what it is, who commits it and why) and examines the results primarily from the business perspective of identifying the most cost-effective methods available to manage the risks. The book provides a menu of anti-fraud techniques and day to day processes designed to prevent, detect and investigate fraud, thus enabling the reader to create a cost-effective anti-fraud framework tailored to the specific needs and circumstances of their own organisation.

Key features of the book include:

  • A clear, logical and accessible structure: each chapter covers an important aspect of fraud and concludes with five key learning points for directors and managers.
  • Numerous illustrative examples from both headline cases and the author’s own extensive experience of fraud investigations.
  • Interviews with directors and managers from both the public and private sectors to give a practical business perspective on the issues discussed.
  • A risk management framework that places fraud in its proper context of corporate governance, risk and business ethics.
  • Identification and analysis of the key anti-fraud preventative and detective controls that have been shown to work best in practice.
  • Strategic guidance and advice on tailoring an effective programme of anti-fraud measures to meet business requirements.
  • The Fraud Awareness Quiz – why not take the Quiz and find out how much you really know about fraud and the risks associated with it?

Managing Fraud Risk: A Practical Guide for Directors and Managers provides the reader with all the tools necessary to create and maintain an effective anti-fraud framework within their own particular organisation.

About the Author

Steve Giles is a chartered accountant with over 20 years experience of fighting fraud. This began with his involvement in the Polly Peck investigation in the early 1990s and continued with a variety of forensic accounting assignments whilst still at Deloitte. Now a consultant, Steve has worked on many fraud investigation cases in the UK, Continental Europe and the US, whilst also advising his clients on the most effective measures that they can take to prevent, deter and detect fraud in their organisations. Today he lectures extensively around the world on fraud and financial crime matters generally and also on the broader subjects of corporate governance, risk management, auditing and business ethics. He is an Associate Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.

Iconic Costumes: Scandinavian Late Iron Age Costume Iconography, by Ulla Mannering

This richly illustrated book presents a selection of the rich and varied iconographic material from the Scandinavian Late Iron Age (AD 400-1050) depicting clothed human figures, from an archaeological textile and clothing perspective. The source material consists of five object categories: gold foils, gold bracteates, helmet plaques, jewelry, and textile tapestries and comprises over 1000 different images of male and female costumes which are then systematically examined in conjunction with our present knowledge of archaeological textiles. In particular, the study explores the question of whether the selected images complement the archaeological clothing sources, through a new analytical tool which enables us to compare and contrast the object categories in regard to material, function, chronology, context and interpretation. The tool is used to record and analyze the numerous details of the iconographic costumes, and to facilitate a clear and easy description. This deliberate use of explicit costume shapes enhances our interpretation and understanding of the Late Iron Age clothing tradition. Thus, the majority of the costumes depicted are identified in the Scandinavian archaeological textile record, demonstrating that the depictions are a reliable source of research for both iconographical costume and archaeological clothing. The book contributes with new information on social, regional and chronological differences in clothing traditions from ca. AD 400 to the Viking Age.

Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game, by Michael Lewis

Moneyball is a quest for the secret of success in baseball. Following the low-budget Oakland Athletics, their larger-than-life general manger, Billy Beane, and the strange brotherhood of amateur baseball enthusiasts, Michael Lewis has written not only "the single most influential baseball book ever" (Rob Neyer, Slate) but also what "may be the best book ever written on business" (Weekly Standard).

"I wrote this book because I fell in love with a story. The story concerned a small group of undervalued professional baseball players and executives, many of whom had been rejected as unfit for the big leagues, who had turned themselves into one of the most successful franchises in Major League Baseball. But the idea for the book came well before I had good reason to write it—before I had a story to fall in love with. It began, really, with an innocent question: how did one of the poorest teams in baseball, the Oakland Athletics, win so many games?"

With these words Michael Lewis launches us into the funniest, smartest, and most contrarian book since, well, since Liar's Poker. Moneyball is a quest for something as elusive as the Holy Grail, something that money apparently can't buy: the secret of success in baseball. The logical places to look would be the front offices of major league teams, and the dugouts, perhaps even in the minds of the players themselves. Lewis mines all these possibilities—his intimate and original portraits of big league ballplayers are alone worth the price of admission—but the real jackpot is a cache of numbers—numbers!—collected over the years by a strange brotherhood of amateur baseball enthusiasts: software engineers, statisticians, Wall Street analysts, lawyers and physics professors.

What these geek numbers show—no, prove—is that the traditional yardsticks of success for players and teams are fatally flawed. Even the box score misleads us by ignoring the crucial importance of the humble base-on-balls. This information has been around for years, and nobody inside Major League Baseball paid it any mind. And then came Billy Beane, General Manager of the Oakland Athletics.

Billy paid attention to those numbers —with the second lowest payroll in baseball at his disposal he had to—and this book records his astonishing experiment in finding and fielding a team that nobody else wanted. Moneyball is a roller coaster ride: before the 2002 season opens, Oakland must relinquish its three most prominent (and expensive) players, is written off by just about everyone, and then comes roaring back to challenge the American League record for consecutive wins.

In a narrative full of fabulous characters and brilliant excursions into the unexpected, Michael Lewis shows us how and why the new baseball knowledge works. He also sets up a sly and hilarious morality tale: Big Money, like Goliath, is always supposed to win...how can we not cheer for David?

"One of the best baseball—and management—books out....Deserves a place in the Baseball Hall of Fame."—Forbes

Amazon.com Review
Billy Beane, general manager of MLB's Oakland A's and protagonist of Michael Lewis's Moneyball, had a problem: how to win in the Major Leagues with a budget that's smaller than that of nearly every other team. Conventional wisdom long held that big name, highly athletic hitters and young pitchers with rocket arms were the ticket to success. But Beane and his staff, buoyed by massive amounts of carefully interpreted statistical data, believed that wins could be had by more affordable methods such as hitters with high on-base percentage and pitchers who get lots of ground outs. Given this information and a tight budget, Beane defied tradition and his own scouting department to build winning teams of young affordable players and inexpensive castoff veterans.

Lewis was in the room with the A's top management as they spent the summer of 2002 adding and subtracting players and he provides outstanding play-by-play. In the June player draft, Beane acquired nearly every prospect he coveted (few of whom were coveted by other teams) and at the July trading deadline he engaged in a tense battle of nerves to acquire a lefty reliever. Besides being one of the most insider accounts ever written about baseball, Moneyball is populated with fascinating characters. We meet Jeremy Brown, an overweight college catcher who most teams project to be a 15th round draft pick (Beane takes him in the first). Sidearm pitcher Chad Bradford is plucked from the White Sox triple-A club to be a key set-up man and catcher Scott Hatteberg is rebuilt as a first baseman. But the most interesting character is Beane himself. A speedy athletic can't-miss prospect who somehow missed, Beane reinvents himself as a front-office guru, relying on players completely unlike, say, Billy Beane. Lewis, one of the top nonfiction writers of his era (Liar's Poker, The New New Thing), offers highly accessible explanations of baseball stats and his roadmap of Beane's economic approach makes Moneyball an appealing reading experience for business people and sports fans alike. --John Moe

From Publishers Weekly
Lewis (Liar's Poker; The New New Thing) examines how in 2002 the Oakland Athletics achieved a spectacular winning record while having the smallest player payroll of any major league baseball team. Given the heavily publicized salaries of players for teams like the Boston Red Sox or New York Yankees, baseball insiders and fans assume that the biggest talents deserve and get the biggest salaries. However, argues Lewis, little-known numbers and statistics matter more. Lewis discusses Bill James and his annual stats newsletter, Baseball Abstract, along with other mathematical analysis of the game. Surprisingly, though, most managers have not paid attention to this research, except for Billy Beane, general manager of the A's and a former player; according to Lewis, "[B]y the beginning of the 2002 season, the Oakland A's, by winning so much with so little, had become something of an embarrassment to Bud Selig and, by extension, Major League Baseball." The team's success is actually a shrewd combination of luck, careful player choices and Beane's first-rate negotiating skills. Beane knows which players are likely to be traded by other teams, and he manages to involve himself even when the trade is unconnected to the A's. " `Trawling' is what he called this activity," writes Lewis. "His constant chatter was a way of keeping tabs on the body of information critical to his trading success." Lewis chronicles Beane's life, focusing on his uncanny ability to find and sign the right players. His descriptive writing allows Beane and the others in the lively cast of baseball characters to come alive.

From The New Yorker
The Oakland Athletics have reached the post-season playoffs three years in a row, even though they spend just one dollar for every three that the New York Yankees spend. Their secret, as Lewis's lively account demonstrates, is not on the field but in the front office, in the shape of the general manager, Billy Beane. Unable to afford the star hires of his big-spending rivals, Beane disdains the received wisdom about what makes a player valuable, and has a passion for neglected statistics that reveal how runs are really scored. Beane's ideas are beginning to attract disciples, most notably at the Boston Red Sox, who nearly lured him away from Oakland over the winter. At the last moment, Beane's loyalty got the better of him; besides, moving to a team with a much larger payroll would have diminished the challenge.

Lewis, who previously wrote some of the best books on Wall Street's go-go '80s (Liar's Poker) and Silicon Valley's go-go '90s (The New New Thing), here turns his attention to professional baseball. Now, I should preface this by saying that I used to love baseball and these days it doesn't interest me much at all. There was a time when I was a total stats geek, I bought all the Bill James abstracts, played tabletop games, etc., but a combination of playing in college and the escalating money completely turned me off to the game. I knew this was supposed to be a good book but had no intention of reading it until Nick Hornby's rave review in his column in The Believer. I figured if one of my favorite British novelists liked the book, there must be something to it. I picked it up and within ten pages I was totally hooked.

The basis for the book is the question of how the Oakland A's, one of baseball's poorest teams as measured by payroll, managed to win so many games in the first few years of the new millennium. Lewis's potentially boring answer revolves around inefficiencies in the market for players, but he weaves this story around the A's General Manager, Billy Beane. Now, if you have some axe to grind with Beane, you might as well not read the book, 'cause Lewis tends to be rather fawning in many places. Still, Beane's own background and mediocre career form the perfect framework upon which to build this story about evaluating baseball talent. Beane was a hugely athletic, "can't miss" prospect, who turned down a joint football/baseball scholarship from Stanford to sign with the New York Mets out of high school. His pro career turned out to be utterly undistinguished, and this disconnect is what drove him to seek new methods of scouting and evaluating baseball talent. It also helped matters that the A's new owners refused to spend any excess money, and demanded that the team be treated as a business. Beane jettisoned conventional scouting wisdom (and to a certain extent, methods), to focus on statistical indicators not widely followed inside baseball. Here, the book takes a detour into the realm of "sabremetrics" (the statistical analysis of baseball), and various attempts to arrive at more meaningful ways to calculating a player's offensive value.

The result of developing a criteria of player valuation that was radically at odds with the prevailing wisdom of the market was that Beane was able to get the players he liked for very cheap. The rest of the book is devoted to detailing this process. Chapter 5 is probably the best, detailing how the A's orchestrated the 2002 amateur draft so that they got an inordinate amount of players they coveted for below market value. Chapters 6 and 7 discuss the loss of their three star players after the 2001 season and how managed to compensate for this. To show the Beane methodology in action during the season, the reader is taken inside several trades and roster moves. This includes a chapter on the mid-season trade for relief pitcher Ricardo Rincon, bracketed by chapters detailing Beane's pursuit of certain players who were not considered major-league material (Scott Hatteberg and Chad Bradford). The book ends on a valedictory note, as the A's set a record by winning 20 games in a row and other teams start to buy in to their methods.

It should be noted that the book is far from perfect. Lewis has an unfortunately tendency for repetition when it comes to important points and themes, hammering them home, again and again. And although he does point out many of Beane's logical inconsistencies and emotional flaws, Lewis does often come across as more of an enamored fan than a strict journalist. Some critics feel that the A's success detailed in the book was based on several star players obtained the old-fashioned way, thus disproving the whole premise. However, it has to be understood that the practices detailed in the book can't really be proven to work one way or another for another decade or so. Still the insights into challenging conventional thinking and searching for alternative data or data patterns will likely appeal to readers of Lewis' other works and are applicable far beyond baseball. And while the jury is still out, several other teams have since hired general managers with the same basic philosophy as Beane. Ultimately, it's an interesting story, and one that Lewis tells very well -- even for non baseball fans.

Awesome. Extremely well written

Awesome.

Extremely well written. Gripping. I just the other day read the book about Bernie Madoff by Markopolos. Very similar experience, a fascinating story that you just can't stop reading.

One of the coolest things about the book for me was the way it was like a bunch of fascinating mini-biographies within a broader story. For example the story of Chad Bradford.

I bet it felt good to write the addendums rebutting the old guard sportswriters and baseball team staffers who spewed a lot of nonsense.

Baseball Exposed
By William E Benson
Glad that I finally read this book. Having played rotisserie baseball for years, I was exposed to many of the aspects shown in this book. It was great to see how the writer could clearly expose the baseball biases by allegedly honest men. Loved the book and will continue to enjoy baseball the way it should be enjoyed.
