Fun and Tender at the Same Time

This book was so much fun to read! The thing that stands out the most is the author's sense of humor. Even in the worst of circumstances for the characters, the author was able to word things in such a way that had me laughing. Like when Liberty's being forced to marry Paul, and before the wedding, her sister and mother instruct her on her wedding night but are too afraid to name the male privates but just tell Liberty that Paul will 'touch her with it'. In light of the fact that Liberty is horrified enough to be marrying Paul, her reaction to her mother and sister's well meaning spiel was just too funny.

The humor was what kept me up most of the night reading the book, but what compelled me to buy this book was the plot. Paul and Liberty meet, and Liberty thinks Paul is a huge bore so she doesn't like him. From there, they become enemies, and Liberty is determined to get her revenge on Paul so she sneaks into his room while he's bathing and takes all of his clothes. (The fact that she can't keep her eyes off his private area while she's trying to get him to promise to cut all ties with her father was funny too.) Her parents and the butler catch her, and the butler ends up creating a scandal about the whole thing, saying she was trying to seduce Paul. The next thing Paul and Liberty know, they're being forced to marry. I love the arch enemies forced into married plot. I also love the virgin hero characteristic. I should add here that the fact that he is a virgin becomes very important in the book later on, but I won't spoil it.

So Liberty who values propriety above all else marries Paul who wants to see the real Liberty. The evolving of their relationship from hate to love was done gently and tenderly. For example, he gave her a journal to start recording whenever she smiled and told her that she becomes beautiful whenever she smiles. Liberty had a hard time believing it due to her plain appearance, but that was one of the most touching scenes I've read in a long time. The book was actually full of such tender moments, and I couldn't help but love both of these characters.

Mix humor with tenderness and you end up with a definite keeper for your bookshelf. Definitely worth 5+ stars! I highly recommend this book.

Better than I expected - Liberty redeems herself

This is the second book in Rose Gordon's "Scandalous Sisters Series." If you've read the first book in the series, Intentions of the Earl, then you'll recall Liberty as the incredibly annoying and high-handed youngest Banks sister, who denounces everyone around her for any transgression against propriety. I wasn't expecting to like "Liberty for Paul" given that Liberty appears in book 1 and the beginning of this book as a vendictive, hypocritical, stubborn, insensitive, self-absorbed and overly-critical shrew. Yep, she's that unlikeable. However, I think the author does an admirable job of eventually explaining why Liberty acts this way (a combination of immaturity and deep insecurities) and redeeming her into a likeable character. While she maintains the tongue of a shrew through much of the book, we come to find that Liberty is actually
a very generous person and naturally inclined towards charitible works. She's hardworking, loyal, and once she realizes that she's acted wrongly she feels her transgressions deeply and tries earnestly to rectify them. So she ends up being a character whose flaws you can forgive as she learns to open her heart.
But the real draw in this story is Paul, which was unexpected because he's pretty boring and a bit mousey for me in "Intentions of the Earl". However, he turns out to be a very likeable, male romance lead - even if he isn't the typical, brooding, powerful, philandering, alpha male. In fact, he's really not like any other main male character that I've encountered in a Regency romance. He's intelligent, sincere, thoughtful, sensitive, virginal, and generally willing to see the best in people and make the best of poor situations. He is the catalyst for Liberty slowly dropping her defenses and revealing her past hurts because he's genuinely interested in understanding what makes her tick and seeing to her happiness. What makes the storyline very human and enjoyable is that Paul somehow decides that the way to get Liberty to be herself and regain her spunk is to incite her to arguments and flare her temper. Eventually, he realizes that encouraging her happiness and smiles is a better avenue, but not before some humorous dinner conversations take place.
The author does a really good job of taking 2 main characters who are far from the romance ideal and molding their story so that you look forward to their eventual happy ending. I actually found the atypical situation and personalities of Liberty and Paul was refreshing and lended to an enjoyable story that falls outside the overused mold of titled gentleman rogue pursues spunky, beautiful heroine.
I can't say that this author is one of my top favorites, but this story (and the "Scandalous Sisters Series" in general) is enjoyable, well-written, and moves along. This author lacks the charm of Julia Quinn and the lush sensuality of Loretta Chase, but I would put her works firmly in the "good" category.

P.S. Fans of Brook and Andrew's storyline that started in "Intentions of the Earl" will be happy to see their marriage progressing nicely as they make some appearance in this book.

Readable but very annoying

If you enjoy books that have the heroine REPEATEDLY running away from her life because of misunderstandings, this book is for you! The premise of the book started off just fine, even though Liberty is 10x more unlikable in this book than Book 1 of the series. She does something stupid, causing a scandal and of course is forced to marry the man she has despised from book one (although the reason why she hates him, as revealed in this book, is VERY lame). They go through the beginning of their marriage with more drama then a soap opera. It started out okay with very typical romance novel misunderstandings happening, only to have more misunderstandings happen again and again and again. Some of which were so far fetched that i just wanted to shake the main characters and just tell them to actually talk to each other! I was so fed up by the end of the book, that I only skimmed through the last 3 chapters just so i could get to the end. Of course it ends with a happily ever after and a nice segway into book 3. Book 1 of this series was pretty good and i will read book 3 with hopes that it will end the series on a high note, but if you have a choice don't read this book. It will only serve to frustrate you.

Before the Baudelaires, there was Snicket…

I only just heard that a four-book prequel to the adventures and misadventures of A Series of Unfortunate Events was in the works. I’d thought to listen to the audiobook on my commute, believing it would take up a couple of days. I ended up devouring the book by day’s end and the succeeding volumes are on order from my library.

Lemony Snicket, melancholy chronicler of the Baudelaires’ story, now begins his own tale, and it’s everything you can expect from a surreal, steampunk and gothic fantasy with a nest of puzzles fit for a modern-day Encyclopedia Brown. Part comedy, part tragedy, part noir, part mystery, all Snicket.

The story itself is simple, at least on the surface: Lemony Snicket, twelve years old and going on thirteen, has at last graduated from VFD’s training in investigation, disguise and all around spycraft. He’s assigned to his mentor and chaperone: S. Theodora Markson, whose confidence in herself is matched only by her utter incompetence.

Snicket and Markson take their first case, in the fading and near-deserted ink-producing town of Stained by the Sea they are tasked with finding a stolen item of unexplained value, but every question answered opens up a host of new difficulties in a tangled plot made up of both intricate schemes and rank bumbling.

Because unfortunately, for all Snicket’s skill and training, he asks the wrong questions and only realizes in hindsight what he should have done.
He’s learning, and he has his new friends and allies in the search for truth, but only time will tell if it will be enough.

By the end I was sure of only two things: I need to read on, and I’ll need to read again.

The author is quite simply a genius in the use of first-person narration. From the very first page readers are treated to hints and foreshadowing that we know will come up later in unexpected ways, and a number of subtle clues that are only apparent upon re-reading. Just as absorbing are the clever and amusing segues of narration, seemingly unrelated to the main story, but that are guaranteed to impact the plot.

As for revolting and menacing villains, you might ask yourself: how could he match the distilled wickedness and treachery of Count Olaf?

He does.

Believe me, he does.

Magical Realism Meets "The Maltese Falcon", for Kids

I like Lemony Snicket/Daniel Handler. Actually, I like and admire him. He is and has been willing to set off in his own direction, at his own speed, for his own purposes without apparent regard for the conventions of children's lit or the lack of precedent for his approach. That said, sometimes his books, especially the later "Series of Unfortunate Events" books, can be sour and brittle or just empty and clever for the sake of cleverness. (Although, you can also say that about authors like Roald Dahl and even Shel Silverstein if you want to get into an argument.)

In this series Snicket has more to work with and has a grander design. What you end up reading is a sort of kid noir magical realism. You have a deadpan, world weary, gimlet eyed 13 year old narrator with a dark sense of humor and a seen-it-all vibe. But, this isn't your typical middle or high school noir in which each school kid plays a younger version of an established noir type, (cheerleader as femme fatale, jock as a goon, isolated nerdy guy as criminal mastermind, and so on). Rather, Snicket sets his deadpan just-the-facts-ma'am hero in an odd, illogical and twisted world filled with fantastical features. It's as though he set a kid's production of "Dragnet" in Oz, (thankfully, without the magic or the flying monkeys).

The effect is a restrained yet surreal tale in which the prosaic and exceptional swirl around to create an unstable world. Sometimes this can be upsetting to adult readers, who expect a cute fun story from "Lemony Snicket". But while they are surprised by the unsettled and contrary Snicket world, kids take to it. Maybe it's because kid readers don't have settled expectations or aren't committed to conventional approaches and so respond well to the freedom of a Snicket book.

These books remind me a lot of Daniel Pinkwater's playfully mystical books, (say, The Neddiad: How Neddie Took the Train, Went to Hollywood, and SavedCivilization or Adventures of a Cat-Whiskered Girl), but where Pinkwater is lively and upbeat the Snicket books all have a strong undercurrent of melancholy. That's potent stuff for a younger reader, but there's nothing wrong with a challenge.

So, all of this is the long way around to saying that this book is sort of a mystery, and possibly a fantasy/adventure, and maybe a coming of age story, and conceivably just a big goof on all of us - but whatever it is it seems to me it would be great fun and a bit mind expanding for a confident and adventurous middle level reader.

Just suddenly ends without warning, closure, or answers

I am a HUGE Lemony Snicket fan in general, and the writing in this book is classic Snicket ... such a joy to blanket myself in that wonderful "voice" again! I can't believe I'm writing a less than stellar review of a work by one of my favorite authors, but maybe I can help to set someone else's expectations more realistically ...

My complaint has nothing to do with the writing, which is wonderful. My husband and I added this to the stack of books that we read to each other in the car, and we just finished it last week. We both enjoyed the ride, but we both felt at the end as if the end of the book was simply ... missing. Nothing was resolved. Nothing was really answered. Please don't misunderstand: It's not that the ending is a cliffhanger. It feels more as if someone has just taken a larger story (of undetermined length), cut the first half (or third, or who knows?) out at random, and packaged it to sell as a complete book without considering whether or not it works as one.

So we're a bit disappointed. I don't mind "serial" stories, but I do like to have at least one story "sub-arc" completed in a novel, even if other elements span multiple books.

Consequently, we're feeling a bit gunshy about this series so far ... we'll probably wait to read reviews of the next book to see if early readers have the same kind of experience with that one before we buy it. Again, don't get me wrong, the writing here is marvelous ... and if you're pretty confident you'll enjoy climbing on at Point A and getting carried along without particularly caring whether you ever arrive at Point B, then there's no reason not to board this train. If, on the other hand, you'd like your destination to BE there when the ride ends, you might want to wait for the series to mature a bit first.

About the Author
Umit Ozguner is a professor of electrical and computer engineering at Ohio State University and holds the TRC Inc. Chair on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). He received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois and has held positions at I.B.M., University of Toronto and Istanbul Technical University. Tankut Acarman is an associate professor of computer engineering and vice director of the Institute of Sciences at Galatasaray University. He received an M.S. in computer and control engineering from Istanbul Technical University (Istanbul, Turkey) and a Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from Ohio State University. Keith Redmill is a research scientist in the department of electrical and computer engineering at Ohio State University, where he earned his M.S. and Ph.D.
