I'll start this review explaining the background of why I purchased this book. If you just want the review, please scroll down, thank you.

BACKGROUND: My girlfriend wants to travel to Japan someday and is really, really interested in almost everything about Japan. I saw this book and I thought: "Maybe this will give her even more reasons to want to go there" However, I wasn't so sure about the kind of content that I would find within this book (a lot of people have written reviews but to me they seemed very general, sorry). Anyway, my review will try to be more thorough and hopefully someone in my situation will benefit my review so... here goes something.

REVIEW:

INTRODUCTION: Let's start with the external part of the book: The picture in the cover is beautiful, this image shown here doesn't make it justice. It feels and looks fantastic, not too big nor heavy and feels solid. Every single page has information about something! There is not one page that is useless, a lot of content here but... what kind of content you may ask?

CONTENT: You will read about a little about the history, the culture, the maps, the places and the people from Japan. This is meant for traveller's but I assure you even non-travellers will find interesting stuff here. Anything from breakfast manners to how you must behave in specific places such as temples, restaurants, etc. You will read about the major cities and towns but also you will learn about those small events that you would only know if you lived there. Example: There was a section about a certain city that had an all out sell out the 7th of every month since October or something like that. My point: Those kind of small details that you would love to know as a traveller.

This is a very complete guide on how to get to Japan and, depending on how long you stay, what are the "must do" stuff before you leave. Buy this book! You will not regret it.

This is a beautiful and informative book, whether you're planning a trip to Japan, or just dreaming of one. I received this book as a gift, and have spent several delightful hours reading through it. Pick it up, open it to any page, and learn something new.

As you would expect in a National Geographic publication, the photos are spectacular. They capture the lovely landscapes, fascinating street scenes and people of Japan.

The book begins with a brief overview of Japan's history and culture, which gives you enough background to appreciate the travel guides in the following sections.

There are recommendations for a short tour of Japan, and travel suggestions if you can stay longer. There is a detailed section on Tokyo, and short excursions from there. The other regions of Japan look appealing too, with attractions in smaller cities, and out-of-the-way spots to visit.

Throughout the book, author Perrin Lindelauf offers helpful insider tips, such as "Beware high-priced restaurants in Namba hiding behind innocuously marked entrances. Ask to see the menu at the door." Good to know!

Highly recommended as both a travel guide, and a book for your nightstand.

Very well written. Covers all the must-see tourist destinations of Japan and gives historic significance of each of them. Moreover, the history written like a story, making it really enjoyable to read. Since it gives a lot of background story about each place, when you actually visit them they stay in memory forever. I am really glad I read this book before visiting. Has some wonderful pictures too !

Good Supplement - Possible Recommendation

I teach AP CSA and have looked at all of the most current AP prep books in hopes to finding a quality one for all of my students to use and recommend to buy. I just received my book today and spent the past hour scanning it. First, when I received the package and opened the book, the first 15 pages had their corner folded, which is not acceptable when shipping a brand new book. The topics are laid out well with thorough explanations of concepts, but not necessarily all of the detail required. Each topic has basic and advanced questions. Advanced are definitely worthy of AP-like questions and the basics; some are, some aren't, but the basics can be a great way of leading in to the advanced. The practice exams at the back look great as well and I appreciate the free response practice items throughout - this is an area this book thrives over others.

In short - if I am going to recommend a book for students...
Explanations - Barron's 7th edition - sometimes a little more confusing, but has more detail or 5 Steps to a 5 - easier to read, but you will miss some key minor details.
Multiple Choice - Barron's - there are more, harder, and detailed explanations for each section.
Free Response - 5 Steps to a 5 - they have a lot of early ones to ease students into it and explain very nicely results for an "open-ended" type answer.

Overall, I would rate this book a 4 out of 5. I would love more than a handful of multiple choice questions per topic. I also do not appreciate having pages bent before I even open it.

This is my real response, not influenced by anyone but myself and I bought this book with my own money. :-)

The authors really have tried to include everything that could help a modern student prepare for the AP exam for Computer Science A. My teen will be studying independently for the exam after taking a year long course and the tools included in the book are extremely helpful.

First of all, the book recommend that you use McGraw Hill's test planning app to customize your study schedule. The app gives you a day by day schedule and also extra practice questions.

To figure out where you stand, you take a diagnostic exam that is half the length of the actual exam. This allows the student to figure out areas of weakness which they can focus on in their preparation for exam day.

Another thing my teen likes about the book is that there are two levels of questions for each subject area - basic and advanced. Books that are filled with only advanced questions can be intimidating and this book does manage to make the topics seem quite accessible.

Beyond that the book has all the standard topics - structure of the exam, each topic explained, test taking strategies, explanations for multiple choice as well as free response problems, Java code Solutions, 3 practice tests and errors to avoid.

All in all, this a well planned an thorough guide written with today's student in mind.

Lots of great information

First, let me say that this is for my son, as he is the one taking the AP course and I thought this book will be helpful. We've only had it a week but so far he is enjoying it... or 'enjoying' it as much as a kid enjoys during doing work during summer break! Since he won't be taking the actual exam for quite a while, I can't yet say if it helps his scores on the AP but I do believe that if he does all the book has in it, he'll definitely fare much better than without it!
It has 3 practice exams as well as a free app to customize his study schedule. This is incredibly useful, as my son easily gets off track so every little organizational idea or app truly helps!
Inside the book it is broken into many 'steps'. Step 1 is to set up the study program as well as what you need to know, and frequently asked questions about the exam. Step 2 is to determine your test readiness and encourages doing the diagnostic exam. Step 3 is all about strategies for success and step 4 is to review the knowledge you need to score high, going into various concepts as what is java, software developer, OOP, Choosing your IDE, and others. Here the book really dives into the information and covers many concepts and breaks down the chapters in the framework of these concepts. Finally, step 5 is titled Building your Test-Taking Confidence.

Also incredibly handy and useful is the appendix. It is filled with goodies, such as a quick reference guide and list of keywords in Java as well as other aspects in addition to an area that lists other online resources.

Both my son and I are excited to utilize this book and I do hope it is truly helpful for him! It looks like a good, well-organized book that will help keep him on track and aid in a successful year and exam!

Strengthen Your Prayer Life

Last month, I was contacted about reading and reviewing several books about personal growth and Christian life before their official release. One particular title was Leaving Ordinary: Encounter God through Extraordinary Prayer by Donna Gaines. In this book, the author uses the story of the tabernacle as a model to teach us how to interact with God through prayer.

Your ordinary daily practice of prayer can become an extraordinary encounter with the living Lord.

Personally, I wasn’t familiar with the tabernacle or it’s various parts and their meaning. But with Donna’s chapter by chapter breakdown of each part along with the Scripture base to support her explanation, my eyes have been opened! The other blessing in this book is her guidance and help in having a stronger, deeper prayer life.

Sometimes I struggle with the “words” of prayer. Jesus knows my heart and soul, and I understand He gets what I’m saying. But it can be frustrating, especially when I need to pray out loud in front of others, whether my child or spouse, or even in our ladies’ group. In the book, Leaving Ordinary, Donna suggests several things to help grow stronger in our “praying skills” if you will. Scripture, who to mimic/practice, even just listening to those we hear praying around us that speaks to our hearts and souls. As basic as it sounds, I never had given it much thought.

I enjoyed this book that it taught me about an important but often overlooked piece of the Bible; but more importantly, it led to a more beautiful and confident, even meaningful prayer life with my Lord, Jesus Christ. I would most definitely recommend this book as a small group study; if nothing else, becoming a stronger praying woman would be easier to do in a group setting.

Leaving Ordinary - Exceeded Expectations!

I had lunch with Donna the week after she finished this manuscript and could hardly wait to get my eyes on the real thing! I was not disappointed! Having set under her teaching at GFBC years ago, I know that Donna is the real deal and writes from true intimacy with our Lord and Savior.

In the past, I personally have found the items/purpose of The Tabernacle hard to understand, but Donna makes it so simple in this book and so exciting as she compares The Tabernacle to Christ Himself. No doubt, I will share her concepts as I teach on prayer in jails and prisons.

I agree with everything the other writers have said about this book. The design is very reader friendly and the short chapters enabled me to read and reflect on a chapter a week day for about a month. Thank the LORD that it IS a paperback and can be mailed into jails and prisons!

The info on ARISE Memphis at the end was also well worth the read! It will be my prayer that other suburban readers will be inspired to reach out to inner cities. May we all read this book and put it down as DOERS of the Word and not just hearers only!

Have you read in the Old Testament Book of Exodus how God instructed Moses to build the Tabernacle in the wilderness? The Tabernacle is a very interesting as well as spiritually enlightening study that is sure to enhance a believer’s relationship with God. The subtitle on the cover is “Encounter God through Extraordinary Prayer”. The author walks women through the various pieces crafted for the Tabernacle as well as the pattern.
Before the Israelites were to enter the Promised Land, God was going to teach them how to worship Him, which was vastly different than the gods of Egypt. If there is anything that will refresh our prayer life, it is studying the portable Tabernacle. Each topic covered in the study is to reveal how Christ is foreshadowed in the place where the people were called to worship. There are just a few questions at the end of each chapter to help readers apply what is learned and space to write for future review by participants.

Good book with a light start

The `Hacks' series from O'Reilly seems to be breeding as fast as virii in a Windows network - every time you turn around another one. While the writing and editing have remained high some such as `eBay Hacks' have not really had great material. `Spidering Hacks' is an improvement almost back to the quality I remember in the last contribution from Calishain, `Google Hacks'.
She and Kevin Hemenway have taken a fairly complex topic, spidering and scraping web sites and reduced it to manageable chunks in their hundred hacks. The writing has the same light, readable feel you can quickly grow to expect from O'Reilly. Certainly I have never found myself faulting their editing.
There are some caveats. It seems that O'Reilly and Dornfest (the Editor of this book and the series) have fallen in love with having a hundred hacks and little in the way of an introduction. I think this may have been a better book if it was done as 90 `hacks' and had a much larger introduction as the first chapters hacks are all too light and more truly introductory material such as how a HTML page is built and how to properly register your spider. Given that only someone with a fair amount of web knowledge is going to consider spidering a website in the first place then this early material is way too slight. From Hack 9 on it quickly gets down to useful and informative chunks in each and no longer feels `lightweight'.
This may be a reflection on trying to extend the `Hacks' series into places it has to be forced. While the format worked well for Google and Amazon I felt the entire topic of eBay too light for a topic in this series and perhaps spidering is too heavy or complex. If this book had been written in a more traditional format some of my complaints would disappear.
All the examples are in Perl and the serious part of the book starts with examples using LWP::Simple to grab a page before going on to LWP::UserAgent and much more complex requests using authentication, custom headers and posting form data. It also covers using curl and wget.
Then it gets down to the nitty gritty of scraping using HTML:Treebuilder and HTML:TokeParser. This is all further expanded through the next few hacks until starting at Hack 39 through to 89 there are a good series of examples (perhaps a few too many). Finally there are two chapters on maintaining your collection and `Giving Back To The World' which tells how to make it easy to scrape your site and using RSS.
O'Reilly have a page for the book with ten example hacks, index, Table of Contents and errata and you can also visit hacks.oreilly.com for the same ten hacks with the possibility of more being added.
As a whole this volume seems a little thin. If you've been doing the maths then you've realised that only about thirty of the hundred hacks actually give any details on building and running a serious web spider. Sure, a number of the examples provide good information on how to perform various tasks and some of the last eleven hacks are good to know but in all the book feels like it lacks solid information throughout. A bit more information on various crawling and page parsing techniques would have been good.
After that criticism I'm now surprising myself, I'm going to recommend this book. This isn't a large field and when you consider that most other books on writing spiders and crawlers are less than practical and more than expensive "Spidering Hacks" has many good points. It's written for the practical Perl programmer, it examines several methods and gives lots of examples and while not cheap it's certainly inexpensive. Given that I found it both useful and inspiring the complaints above may be a little like nitpicking. I should also say that I found this volume immensely useful in writing my own spider and scraper (it gets a list of new books from the web sites of several publishers.) I have to be honest and admit that there are three publishers, O'Reilly, Addison Wesley and Prentice Hall, from whom I expect a decent standard and criticise a little harder when they move from that norm. If this book had come from SAMS or Wrox I may well have not looked quite so hard for flaws and been a little more generous in my treatment of the ones I found.
That said, I recommend this book to you if you want a practical introduction to building a web spider in Perl.

Many examples of how to use spiders

The book has a nice collection of case studies on how to gather data from disparate websites. You might consider this as showing a simple way for you to use Web Services.
Spidering is the way that search engines gather their data. But you do not have to be Altavista or Google to use spiders. Nor do you have to be scanning a large fraction of the Web. The authors demistify spiders. If you can follow their examples, then you get concrete instances of usage that might help your particular application.
Thoughtfully, the examples are mostly written in Perl, with a few in Java. These languages should be familiar to many. Though even if you don't know them, the logic of the code can still be useful. (That is, you can treat the code as pseudocode.)
While spiders are probably best known as being used by search engines, they are really only the starting point for the latter. The much harder problems start when you have the data amassed by a spider. Now you have to efficiently find correlations between the various web pages. You should be aware that the book does not discuss these with any significant depth. Not surprising, because these are outside the scope of the book. The examples do show how to use the data found by spiders. But most of these are for web pages that sit in a given domain. So the pages are closely affiliated in content and structure.

Lots of great ideas

Once in a long while you get a book that inspires you with a lot of great small ideas. Spidering Hacks is just that type of book. The web has a wealth of structured and semi-structured that is just waiting to be mined with automated tools. This book not only teaches you how to get the data out of these sources, but gives you idea about where to look for information and what to do with it.
This book demonstrates everything I like in a technical book. It not only describes how things are done. It also gives practical examples of how the technology can be useful in the real world, and presents them enthusiastically. It makes you want to go out and implement all of the ideas and to keep on going with some of your own.
Nitpicks I have with the book are minor. The 'Hacks' format seems imposed, for example, hack #8 is about installing CPAN. I don't think that section should be left out, but I don't think it's a hack either. Kindergarten-Grade 3—Tongue-in-cheek humor peppers this original tale that incorporates the stone-soup motif but is based on a Chinese legend instead of the European folktale. A fisherman complains that the three boys he has hired to work on his boat are "somewhat stupid" and "lazy" even though the illustration reveals that he is lounging at the stern while the boys toil. At lunchtime he barks out orders, "Ting! Gather firewood. Pong! Prepare the cooking pot and clean the fish." The cooking pot is missing, however. Undaunted, the young lads dig a hole in the sand for cooking and throw a "fish stone," an "egg stone," and a "vegetable stone" into a nearby fire. They distract their employer by asking him to make bamboo bowls and chopsticks while they add the real ingredients to the sand pot. When the rocks are added to the soup, the food floats to the surface. The unpleasant employer then claims that he can make soup from stones, but it is clear from the illustrations that the villagers know he's been fooled. The watercolors are in eye-catching shades of blue, green, and yellow, and are filled with motion and humor: a monkey imitates the jaunty walk of the fisherman, and pen-and-ink drawings meticulously detail whiskers and hair. "The truth is that Stone Soup was invented . . . in China," writes Compestine, and in her version of the traditional folktale, a Chinese fisherman narrates. He complains about his young helpers: "Nice boys, but lazy and, I'm sorry to say, somewhat stupid." Jorisch's illustrations--expressive, gouache-and-ink scenes--tell a different story, though. Images show the rotund fisherman relaxing on his boat while the children do the work. For lunch one day, the resourceful boys make a soup, tricking their boss into believing it is river stones that create the flavor. The pompous boss returns to the village, boasting about his new discovery. Children who don't look closely at the pictures may have trouble following the action, but alert kids will chortle over the contradictory stories told by the words and images, and recognize the self-important adult who is oblivious to the kids' ingenuity. A recipe for Egg Drop Stone Soup is appended to this natural choice for folktale units. An author's note explains the story's cultural history but doesn't include a source. Gillian Engberg

The best, funniest, and most challenging Stone Soup for older students

I use folk tales with my 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade English Language Learners. One of our projects is to read all the versions of STONE SOUP to examine the perspectives of the characters and the message(s) of the various tales. My students always love Pete Seeger's retelling of the tale: Some Friends to Feed (with its CD of Pete's own retelling and a song to sing about Friends to Feed.) They love the tale for Pete's voice, his song, and because the townspeople are hungry...but they are NOT STINGY. This is the best version for the youngest children, too. The version my students always love the best, however, is The "Real" Story of Stone Soup by Ying Chang Compestine. It is a sophisticated story filled with irony and intellectually the most challenging of all versions. It is also, by far, the funniest. Homeschooling mom has problems with the bad language used by the first person narrator. Her problem, I think, might have more to do with the age of her children: it is not really intended to be comprehensible by very young children. The world experience, the subtlety of human relationships, and the complexity of literary device makes it the most challenging and the most fun of all Stone Soups, for age 9 and up (to and including adults). I had to write this review because Amazon's one-star ranking is unfair to the book and might dissuade teachers and older students from experiencing a fine book offering a rigorous academic experience. Go for it! (Especially if your students are Chinese, as mine are. It's a joy!)

I don't know why anyone would talk smack about a book as good as this. My 5th grade class loved it! I guess there are some words that really uptight people would dislike, like "stupid" but it really didn't affect us. I hate to break it to the world but you hear a lot worse words in public schools. I found the way the boys get back at the lazy fisherman is really original and hilarious. The artwork is awesome as well. This book is one of my favorites, and I'd reccommend it to anyone!

This is a very good textbook, definitely worth buying if you need it for a class

In contrast to many of my electrical engineering textbooks, I actually used and learned from this book. If you're on the fence about buying it for you class I'd say go for it, it's well written and pretty easy to follow. Also, it was very helpful for writing research papers.
