Another treasure hunt challenge

This is the companion to the Maranatha treasure hunt book. It is the research information and apparently is needed if not required. I find the puzzle very confusing as to what I should be looking for. I have spent very little time with it. Appears to be difficult and I am sure it is with the 1 million BP prize. With the anonymity of the authors, it makes me wonder if the prize will be awarded if solved. Prize is awarded at their discretion if solved.

Fast-Paced Erotic Journey

I read this book very quickly, as the pacing is wonderful. It's a fun ride with three main characters, all of whom are strong and have a clear cut purpose. At first, I thought it was about saving a planet, Verdantia. But, it becomes much more. It is as much the characters' journeys as the story of protecting a race and culture.

The author did not use miscommunication as the tension between the characters. (Thank you!) Rather, the characters upped the ante for each other through love, understanding and lots of sex and lovemaking. It is erotica, after all!

The female lead is refreshingly strong - from the beginning. And, the twists and turns they must take are interesting and fun. Highly recommended book!

Everything I could ever want in a SciFi Erotica Romance

I will be perfectly honest. It takes a great deal for a work of Erotica to earn 5 stars and impress me while doing it. While I do enjoy a well written intimacy scene in a book, I am not really interested in sex for sex's sake, which is the hallmark failure of most erotica books in any genre. If there is copious amounts of sex going on, I want there to be a very good and believable reason for it. Not only did Hers To Command deliver on that, Knight surrounded the very heated intimacy scenes with substance.

The prologue of the book begins with a historical account of the colonization, uniqueness and history of the planet Verdantia. While I am not a fan of "world building" prologues (which in most cases is just a lazy-author excuse for spewing forth an info-dump in order to avoid having to work it into the actual story), I reserved judgement and continued reading, not really expecting much if the prologue was any indication. Typically, stories with a prologue like that will fail at doing any kind of enjoyable or significant world building within the rest of the book, resulting in an automatic three stars on my score-card. I know this can be seen as a bit harsh, but my background is Space Opera, folks, where world-building is queen, second only to an epic story.

Imagine my chagrined surprise when Knight proceeded to hand me a well-formed world-building hat, lathered in rich story-dripping ketchup, and asked me to eat it. And eat it, I did.

Verdantia and its cast of characters are presented as living, breathing three-dimensional props that support not only the reason for the very heated intimacy, but also a story and world that has a long standing history, a complex present and an uncertain future. There is a war raging on Verdantia, and because of its unique physical properties which renders technological devices useless, the war is a brutal campaign of swords, horses, and all the medieval trappings of a fantasy novel. This is supplemented in the science-fiction sense by the science of the planet's electromagnetic properties, which the commoners call magick, and the participation in the war by the League of Federated Planets. There is an interplanetary war between the Haarb, Verdantia and the LFP who is backing Verdantia in a support role. So, although the book does have a strong Fantasy vibe at times, it is a work of Science Fiction.

So, world-building: Check. Science Fiction with a unique twist: Check. Characters.... Check, Check, Check. Three checks for three very well crafted characters, who are also supported by a full cast of memorable people. Even the smallest role is given enough life for me to remember them twenty pages later. I won't spend much more time on the characters, as I expect many of the other reviews to focus on the three protagonists, but I will state that Ari is a strong, captivating man with presence and a reluctant heart. Fleur is just as strong, with a quick enjoyable wit but who still retains a hint of graceful naivete, and Doral is the aloof, cool, grounding force with a troubled past that completes the Tetriarch.

There are two lead villains - one a corrupted government official who loves money almost as much as he loves himself, and Krakoll who is the leader of the Haarb brute forces who are trying to conquer Verdantia for its wealth of an aphrodisiac spice called cinnagrin. They have almost equal appearances in the book, and I am hoping to see more of Krakoll in book 2, as he was the more viciously interesting of the two.

I think my only true gripe with this book falls back to the prologue. I don't think it was necessary, I think it will, however, lead to the confusion and possible deterrent to readers with less science-fictional interest. I think some of the points in the prologue should be woven into the story (though many are) and it should be removed.

Overall, very impressed and I am looking forward to book 2, Hers To Choose, due out in July.

Verdantia is an erotic delight. What a planet!

Patricia Knight seamlessly weaves a whole new world, society, and culture through tantalizing, steamy scenes that make a woman yearn to experience a man (or two) with the endurance her heroes repeatedly demonstrate to the point of torture. She puts Fleur through ecstatic heaven, and a little bit of hell judging from Fleur's demand for some serious payback on at least one occasion.

The beauty of this novel is that the Verdantian's salvation depends on this trio spending a lot of intimate time together. This book has two strong-minded, well-endowed, and dangerous heroes, one relatively inexperienced but charming princess, and a well-crafted plot that lifts this book from the normal fare of erotica into a sci-fi fantastical feast for the senses.

While Theresa Hak Kyung Cha's work of poetry Dictee has received due critical attention (most recently from poet Juliana Spahr), her artist's books and other art works are less well known. Dictee will be re-released this October, along with The Dream of the Audience, a book documenting a travelling exhibition dedicated to the Korean-American Cha (1951-1982). In addition to excellent reproductions of Cha's handbound texts and images from her performances, the book includes essays by Berkeley Art museum curator Constance Lewallen, Whitney Museum of American Art curator Lawrence Rinder and critic and filmmaker Trinh T. Minh-ha.

Profoundly nuanced, challenging, powerful.

This book baffles me but I can't help coming back to it time and again. It makes my brain turn flip-flops and, in doing so, realize faculties of thought, imagination and empathy that I never knew existed. Cha's work is amazing, original, extremely insightful and interesting, bleak, defiant. As college reading lists "discover" the works of Asian American women writers (many of whom, like Amy Tan, are immensely popular but regularly problematized by scholars in Asian American studies), Theresa Cha must not be overlooked or forgotten.

Moments of Clarity

The poet Charles Simic says, "Long drawn-out works conflict with the fragmentariness of our consciousness. What is recorded in a notebook is the sense of the unique and unrepeatable experience of the rare moments of clarity."
Dictee is this kind of book, a collection in nine parts of mixed writing styles including short passages in French and English, jounal entries, stories and dreams, even a handwritten letter. And more. Theresa Hak Cha's book, which has been callled both fiction and autobiography, also contains photographs, film stills, diagrams, and other black and white images. "Electic" only begins to describe the structure and style of Dictee.
Cha's writing doesn't come without risk--Dictee seems thematically and structurally difficult. But it's with this style, actually a process-of-writing style, that Cha shows us how her mind works. It's in her "fragmentariness" that elements of profound meaning rise to the surface, what Simic meant by "rare moments of clarity." Cha's imagination on the page, her explorations into language and poetic lyricism--with connections to nationalist and feminist themes--help us feel her genuine struggle with Korea as a victim of the Cold War. This message is her legacy; it's a kind of Presence in her writing. And we sense her triumph.

Cha's "Dictee" a Journey Worth Taking

The autobiographical work of Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, "Dictee," is both a challenging and unique experience to read. Her provocative blend of prose, poetry, narrative and historical pieces, among other genres, reveal a voice that purposely avoids a "typical" patriarchial discourse that is refreshing although disarming. Her words, contextually somewhat difficult for the (this) reader not previously aware of the complexities and truths of Korean history (both in Korea and America), are at once powerful and insightful...poetic, yet raw. Cha is able to use her gift to offer a glimpse into one woman's history and journey; one that ended much too soon on this planet for this talented artist.

The Spice of Life!

In his well articulated book, Dr. Munro Richardson does a masterful job of outlining the essential ingredients necessary for finding purpose and making more meaning in our lives - each of which can be found within ourselves. It's great! One problem though!

I love this book. It's a great solutions manual, the only problem is the author/editor missed sig fig errors. Considering how much this book stresses sig figs, I was a little surprised. Often the book will ask for answer in 3 sig figs and report the answer in 2 sig figs instead of 3 or the reverse. For example lets say HOAc, Ka = 1.74x10^-5, this Ka value has 3 sig figs. Now suppose the answer they wanted was the pKa, the book would report the answer as 4.76, which is wrong b/c the 4 is a power of 10 and not significant, therefore there are only TWO sig figs in that answer. The correct answer would be 4.759 or 4.760.

This is my only complaint. Still giving the book 5 stars as this is an annoying issue, but a relatively minor one.

It's complete but almost impossible to learn from without supplemental resources. Get this and Essential Biochemistry and you'll have a much better time with it. Also Kahn Academy absolutely is amazing.

This book is written by scientists. They are not writers, and it is painfully evident.

this is my favorite. 5th Edition was hardly different from 6th

All of my undergraduate courses in Biochemistry taught straight from this book at the University of Arizona. Having looked at three other biochemistry books, this is my favorite. 5th Edition was hardly different from 6th. Just a few changes to pictures, none of the problems were different. Before purchasing this, go to your Biochem department and ask if they have any of these lying around. My department had over 30 5th editions lying around free to anyone. Ask your profs if they are getting rid of there instructor's manual, I did and got a copy of one.

A timely and important book

This timely and extremely important book shows us the way to a dialogue that goes beyond the old zero-sum games. The book is subtitled "Finding Faith Without Fanaticism," and Hirschfield -- a Rabbi and former gun-carrying member of the extremist wing of Israel's settler movement -- speaks with authority about his personal epiphany. It is easy to be pluralistic and believe in dialogue when one is an oppressed minority, staring at the barrel of a gun. But to have one's finger on the trigger and reach the same conclusion is rare, and far more compelling. Hirschfield powerfully describes his experiences and the alternative path he chose to pursue.
The remainder of the book elaborates on Hirschfield's central insight: that oftentimes we gain nearly as much from recognizing what we have in common as we do from debating our differences. Like many of our greatest teachers, Hirschfield imparts this lesson through an engaging combination of philosophical analysis, personal stories, and close and innovative reading of traditional Biblical texts. We follow Hirschfield as he travels to places where his views are presumably unwelcome -- to Berlin, to Moscow, to Fez, Morocco -- and learn from watching his examples.
The book's lessons are not reserved for geopolitics. Hirschfield writes persuasively and easily about interpersonal relationships as well, sharing stories from his own life, from Adam and Eve, and from The Cosby Show. Nor is the book's message concealed behind academic jargon. To the contrary: Hirschfield's writing is refreshingly conversational, casual without being dumbed-down.
Ultimately, the import of this book lies in the insight that there's more to being right than proving another wrong. It is a powerful affirmation that truth can be absolute -- real truth, not a watered-down simulacrum called "truth" -- but it need not be absolutist.

Happily even-keeled

Being to the "right" of the author (both religiously and politically), I anticipated another in a line of Shalom Auslander- Richard Dawkins-Christopher Hitchens anti-religious rant against those who are orthodox in their beliefs. Surprisingly, Hirschfield actually validates those who believe, in all forms and ideals. What is new and even refreshing is the lessons he brings from a life of open voyage. Truthfully, we can find disagreement on the issues of intermarraige as well as eating lobster on shabbos- but I think Hirschfield would have it no other way.
Towards the end of the book, when Brad writes "idealism is a part of faith, or perhaps faith is the ultimate expression of idealism", he encapsulates the essence of belief and religion for so many. The striving for unprovable understanding, grasping the intangible. Simply, a must read philosphical treatise in under 250 peages.

Faith without Imposing One's Own Truth on Another

Rabbi Hirschfield has written a highly accessible and personal account of the hard-learned lesson that one can have a deep and abiding faith WITHOUT the necessity of losing one's ability to maintain what Rabbi Jonathan Sacks has termed "the Dignity of Difference"--i.e. the ability to respect the possibility that an other can have legitimate faith and access to truth as well. This is an incredibly important lesson for our time. At a time in world history in which the secular pursuit of truth that has dominated the Western world for the past 400+ worlds is not yielding the promised fruit, and people are turning back to the faith traditions for ultimate answers to the questions of "Why?" and "Who am I?" (ie. questions of meaning and identity, respectively), there is a burning need to recognize and develop the positive values of religion and belief for humankind, and to minimize the risk of faith-driven mutually assured destruction. For, as Chief Rabbi Sacks has pointed out, the greatest and most powerful weapon of mass destruction is the human mind. And yet, at the same time, it is also the most powerful engine of hope for humanity.

Excellent Source for leaning how to configure Project System

I have read this book cover-to-cover. I recommend it to anyone who is seriously interested in learning how to configure and use the Project System (PS) component of SAP R/3. It is a concise, easy-to-read, and extremely instructive guide to using PS and I believe it should be a MUST-HAVE for anyone who works with the Project System. It employs an approach that I wish were modeled in other books about R/3 configuration.

While reading this book and with a smll bit of prior knowledge about PS, I was able to configure a project from scratch, including related configuration work in the IMG. It is the best source for an R/3 product that I have encountered and having taught SAP R/3 Configuration for 8 years and taken over 63 days of SAP Americas' R/3 training, I think this says a lot.

I wish there were books like this about such topics as variant configuration, SCM, SNC, and APO: it would have made it a lot easier for me to have learned about configuring these products.

Caveat: I do not know how this book would be for someone who has never worked with R/3 but I also do not think anyone interested in the Project System would be in that situation.

Very Dissapointed from a user perspective

As a user of PS i was very dissapointed in this book and I would not recommend it to anyone with limited knowledge or wanting to learn how to use PS from a user perspective.

The project builder which I believe is one of the main components of PS only receives a cursory look in the book.The building of a WBS structure showing hierarchies etc had no suitable examples and was only briefly touched on.

Nice Book

This is a nice handbook for somebody who wants fast answers to common questions. The best part is how the scenarios are covered, that let you understand more about PS. Also the configuration part is very interesting. This is not a handbook of how to use the basic of PS, this is about how to do advance configurations and how PS relate whit the other modules.
