About the Author
Shira Lubliner is the president of California Professors of Reading/Language Arts. She has been an educator for more than thirty years, working as a classroom teacher, a private school principal, and currently as an associate professor of teacher education at California State University, East Bay. She is the author of numerous articles and several books, including A Practical Guide to Reciprocal Teaching (Wright Group/McGraw-Hill, 2001), Getting Into Words: Vocabulary Instruction that Strengthens Comprehension (Brookes, 2005), and Nourishing Vocabulary (co-authored with Judith C. Scott, published by Corwin Press, 2008). Lubliner presents workshops for teachers on vocabulary instruction and reading comprehension throughout the country.

Recent essays from a remarkable career

Nina Coltart was a remarkable independent and able training analyst, teacher, and respected administrator at the (British) Institute of Psycho-Analysis for more that twenty years. She has written that since childhood, the thing she loved most was "listening to people telling me their stories." Her intense and fruitful intellectual engagement with her work was well known, and was matched by her commitment to her patients - their hearts and minds as well as their "stories." She specialized in, but was not limited to, consultations for diagnosis and assessment, and was renowned for her skill and sensitivity in referring more than 3,000 patients to especially suitable practitioners. In addition, she had read Modern Languages at Oxford at a young student - medicine came later - and so is a writer for whom the whole world is (sometimes) just barely big enough. All but one of these clear, well-organized essays were written in the past several years. In them she details her various philosophies and opinions, and offers compassionate, insightful, and sometimes thrilling stories from her clinical practice. (She successfully treated one patient with ulcerative colitis with psychotherapy.) She includes - and lovingly explains - many of her personal, relevant, and very interesting opinions. She illuminates her interest and commitment to Buddhism, and its helpfulness to her professional work, in "Buddhism and Psychoanalysis Revisited." In "Endings," her topics are death, the difference between worry and concern, termination of the analytic relationship - and much more. She notes, not insincerely, that one of the worst things about her own death will be her inability to write about it afterwards.
This is a fine collection which anyone with an interest in psychoanalysis will find valuable and pleasurable.

About the Author

LUIS E. NAVIA is Professor of Philosophy at New York Institute of Technology. He has held various administrative positions, including the deanship of Arts and Sciences, and he has worked for over twenty years for the Commission on Higher Education (Middle States). He is the author of thirteen books, including The Socratic Presence: A Study of the Sources, The Philosophy of Cynicism: An Annotated Bibliography (Greenwood, 1995), and Classical Cynicism: A Critical Study (Greenwood, 1996).

An important philosophy for our time.

I thoroughly recommend Diogenes of Sinope as essential reading for both Classical Greek scholars and those who simply wish to learn out more about the Cynics, their philosophy, and their way of life. Indeed, anyone who has overlooked this important philosophy. Scholarly in its approach, this book is yet compulsively readable. I was easily carried through the text which is generously peppered with fascinating anecdotes from the primary sources as well as Navia's own compelling interpretations. What better place to start an understanding of Cynicism than through its hero Diogenes.
In Chapter 4, Hegel's view that Cynicism contains little philosophy and no `system' is demolished. Navia presents the reader with a very comprehensive and systematised account of what Cynicism's philosophy is, and yet achieves this without undermining Cynicism's integrity, for instance by not leaving a trail of `truths' for some unscrupulous management theorist to claim as the latest quick fix for a failing company. At the end of this chapter, Cynicism emerges with its anti-scientific credentials intact, but also with much greater clarity about what Diogenes' brand of Cynicism stands FOR as well as what it opposes. I deliberately choose the present tense here, because what Navia demonstrates in these pages, is that (unlike the ideas of say Freud or Marx, who as one writer put it `were weighed down by the cultural baggage of their time'), Diogenes' view of the world is as fresh and relevant today as it was 2,300 years ago. The reader should be left in no doubt that Cynicism represents a very powerful philosophy, even if he or she is not inclined to share it.
Throughout the book I was impressed by passages that sent me off contemplating contemporary issues and debates, but I also appreciated the detail and minutia that conjured up vivid portraits of life at the time ~ Diogenes life in particular. The appendix of Diogenes Laertius' (not to be confused with Navia's own hero) original writings about Diogenes the Cynic is very helpful in supporting Navia's own text. What Navia has achieved cleverly in this book, is to strike a balance between producing an authoritative text which reinforces the `facts' available, while at the same time, acknowledging the myth-making that is essential for a real understanding of the Diogenes phenomenon.

Not a lot is known about Diogenes. Diogenes was an enigma, an eccentric, call him wise or just a fool depends on perspective. Even a medical syndrome is named after him reflecting his way of life and not necessarily his insight. The work of academic scholarship brings to light the information we have about him which is very scarce and often controversial. Diogenes is often cited for his cynical remarks especially the famous ones with Alexander the great. The book is not as much about his philosophies as it is about Diogenes the man, and his life and of what is known about him. This is a good scholarship on the information we have on Diogenes based on research.

The Art and Alchemy of Craft Beer

The beautiful photographs in this book certainly speak to the allure of craft beer. The author, an experienced brew master, provides a brief history of beer, an examination of assorted ingredients and equipment and concise instructions on how to make beer. The bulk of the book contains recipes for a wide variety of ales, lagers, wheat beers and mixed styles.

This is certainly an attractive book. However for practical use, it would be challenging for novices. Neither the organization nor the spare instructions are especially user friendly. Those who have mastered the process may be inspired by the recipes. But I think beginners would find How to Brew: Everything You Need To Know To Brew Beer Right The First Time or Home Brewing with BeerSmith: How to Brew and Design Great Beer at Home or The Complete Joy of Homebrewing Third Edition easier to follow and more generous in instruction and explanation. I would have liked to see a more detailed resource section and a beer and food pairing chart. Still this is an impressive book both in terms of appearance and content and is sure to delight any craft beer fan. Recommended

An excellent guide to home brewing for beginners

Any review of a guide to home brewing must be a very personal affair. Ultimately, regardless of whatever the merits of a particular guide book may be, the key question is whether the reader will actually use the darn thing, and that may depend on some otherwise superficial aspects of the book.

There is an awful lot in Greg Hughes' "Home Brew Beer" to recommend it to the prospective home brewer. First, consider the physical traits of the book (something I'd rarely do in anything other than a how-to book). It's a big hardback book that actually lies flat when you lay it on a tabletop, counter, or bookstand . . . so you can have it open to refer to during the brewing process without having to find a paperweight to keep the darn thing from flipping closed.

The big pages also allow for text in good-sized font so you can read it from a few feet away (see the preceding paragraph) and there are lots of practical full-color photographs so you can see what the author is talking about - whether it's a picture of pouring malt extract into a pot of water, how to use a hydrometer, or how a pressure barrel differs from a keg. There are also a number of helpful diagrams. While there are a couple of glossy photos of perfectly-poured beers, this is a functional book rather than a coffee-table book about beer.

The book uses glossy pages to allow for the full-color effect, but the pages leave plenty of room for your own hand-written notes, so once you are comfortable with marking up the nice paper, you'll be fine. By contrast, Charlie Papazian's "The Complete Joy of Home Brewing (3rd edition)" uses a lower-grade paper quality perfectly designed for marginal notes, but does not allow for color photos and crams more words onto smaller pages, so you're going to need to be more judicious with your notes in Papazian's book.

That's a lot of describing the physical book itself, but how about what is actually in Hughes' book? There's an awful lot of meat on the bone in terms of brewing knowledge here. After a thorough section on "Ingredients," Hughes has an extensive section on "Getting Started" that goes from "Before You Begin" to how to label your bottles. The next 140-odd pages walk through different brewing recipes and styles, with generally one page being dedicated to each beer. Recipes range from the (Brown Porter, American Pilsner, English IPA) to the obscure (Nettle Beer, Vanilla Bourbon Stout, Smoked Beer) that should keep the home brewer experimenting for years. The brewing recommendations for each recipe are presented in bullet-point format, again with plenty of room for marginal notes. This is in marked contrast to Papazian's book, which offers more of a narrative for brewing recipes.

All in all, "Home Brew Beer" is highly recommended for any home brewer, but is probably better suited for beginners.

Great money-saving resource for those interested in tackling home-brewing or expanding their beginner home-brewing experience

This is a great resource-- especially for recipes. I think most of the instructional portion of this book is available online. However, the author does a great deal for simplifying the procedure by using lots and lots of good photos to accompany his instructions.

I have brewed before and it turns out that I inadvertently followed the author's instructions for learning brewing and have used a kit, used malt extract, and have just recently bought what I need to tackle full-mash brewing. I am VERY glad to have his instructions for this process, which requires more equipment than I had expected and already has saved me from plunging into a project without the right tools (need a tun and sparge arm), which I seem to love to do. I've made several very good batches of bitter in the past and plan another for my experiment in full-mash.

The book is loaded with recipes, even some for lambics, which has always been a dream of mine. I have access to a very good brew shop-- DeFalco's, in Houston, so I've always be able to just pick up the phone and bug them with my questions. Thanks to Mr. Hughs' thorough instructions for full-mash brewing I'm feeling a bit more confident and hoping I won't need to pester my home-brew connections with incessant questions for this batch.

If you are interested in starting home-brewing, I think this book is a very, very, very good investment. I wish I had had a copy of it to start with. I'm a cheapskate, but this would be worth the money to both new brewers and intermediate brewers alike.

Great reference - good as a building block to learning Polish.

I bought this book when I took a semester abroad in Poland as a reference. This book is well organized and gives a great overview of the verbs and all tenses. The Polish verbs are organized alphabetically, so if you know what the verb is you need to conjugate, it is easy and fast to find.
What this book is not - is a dictionary.
If you are looking for a fast reference from English to Polish and have no prior knowledge of the language then this book is not a huge help. It is most useful for someone who is actively learning the language and already knows the verb they need to conjugate.

For my needs it was perfect - a great support in learning, and using Polish.

Perfect companion to using Rosetta Stone Polish.

This is an excellent additional resource to use in learning Polish. I was using Rosetta Stone Polish and having a difficult time with their method of introducing verbs and verb tenses. This book makes it all logical and easy to look up verbs. The book makes no assumptions about your level of knowledge so anyone can use this book and be able to learn from it. It has relieved a lot of stress in my trying to learn Polish using Rosetta Stone. I was going to order Swan's Polish Verbs book until I read it's reviews, and I'm so glad I read reviews. Janecki's 301 Verbs is perfect for me. Janecki also includes a verb index listing nearly 2300 verbs. The back of the book has some quizzes and puzzles with answers which add a little fun and motivation to spend more time learning. You can't go wrong with this book.

I really like this book

I really like this book. Mainly because it is easy to use and contain a lot of verbs. Don't get mistaken by the title of the book. The "301" verbs is because there is 301 verbs conjuguated in this book. But, in the end you will find an Annexe with a lot more verbs but they are not conjuguated already. I give a 4 stars only because I think the book is a bit complexe to use. But, still it is a very good one.

This little tiny guide is FULL of great information...well organized and stuff you will use...perfect size and a fold out map as well as many maps in the actual text...I know I will be using this every day !!
