About the Author
Alexis De Vos is electrical engineer and physicist, graduated from the Universiteit Gent (Belgium). He is currently part-time system engineer of the Flemish interuniversity microelectronics research centre, and part-time professor at the department of Elektronica en informatiesystemen of the Universiteit Gent. His research is concerned with material science (polymers, semiconductors, metals, liquid crystals), microelectronics (thin films, chips) and energy sciences (thermodynamics, solar energy, endoreversible engines, reversible computing). Besides writing this book, he was co-editor of the book "Thermodynamics of energy conversion and transport" (published 2000). Since 1993, he is the coordinator of the pan-European Carnot Network on thermodynamics and thermo- economics of energy conversion and transport.

Unvarnished, But Necessary Counsel

Dr. Thompson, the founder of the Verbal Judo program, has teamed up with Gregory Walker, to comment on the dysfunctional problems found in organizations and they propose some interesting solutions, unique problem solving tactics and effective success strategies. This is a somewhat idiosyncratic commentary on organizational politics, communications and leadership in today's world.

A short book, 180 pages, it is divided into 15 topical chapters that range from the Tao of Leadership to the Art and Gift of Persuasion. The unifying theme is the need for improved leadership built upon honest and effective communication. The book addresses what went wrong, communication styles, principles for supervisory success and approaches to analytical thinking and effectiveness.

With such a broad range of topics in a small book, there is a real risk of skimming the topics and leaving the reader confused. However; the authors skillfully handle the task often referencing their collective experience in the form of brief stories. Their overall approach is certainly less than diplomatic, for example at their discussion of the four levels of expertise, they write:

To allow incompetence a berth in your organization is in itself a sign of incompetence at the highest level of responsibility. It is also a sign of a moral and ethical coward.

While their approach may offend, it does cause the reader to actively engage in the discussion and consider both their primary points and supporting arguments carefully.

Thompson and Walker are skilled teachers and seasoned practitioners, the time you invest reading this book will be enriching. Buy the book, read this book and more importantly put these principles into action.

Kudos to this Verbal Judo addition

Understanding what leadership is all about, the authors shed light on what it takes to develop an excellent workforce -- it takes non-egotistical, steadfast leaders, people who'll put themselves in the background to achieve the greater good! I'm hooked and have read this book twice and am implementing it daily in both my professional and personal life! A perfect supplement to the Verbal Judo way!

Works in my job and in my marriage. Once you start applying the tenets of this book you'll be pleasantly surprised at how much less stress you have and how much easier it is to manage people and get through the day. Makes things a lot easier to deal with, both subordinates and upper management along with the three types of people mentioned in the book.

About the Author

Bradley T. Erford, Ph.D., LCPC, NCC, LPC, LP, LSP, is the 2012-2013 President of the American Counseling Association (ACA) and a professor in the school counseling program of the Education Specialties Department in the School of Education at Loyola University Maryland. He has authored or edited more than 24 books. His research specialization falls primarily in development and technical analysis of psycho-educational tests and outcomes research and has resulted in the publication of more than 60 refereed journal articles, more than 100 book chapters, and 15 published tests. He has received numerous awards for his scholarship and service to the counseling profession from ACA and the Association for Assessment and Research in Counseling (AARC), organizations within which he has held numerous leadership positions.

About the Author

DR. EBRAHIM VAAHEDI has over thirty years of power industry experience in power system operation and power system planning, as well as the development and deployment of decision support tools. He currently leads the Operations Technology Department at BC Hydro, where he is responsible for Operations Technology strategy development and solution delivery. He obtained his BSc from Sharif University of Technology, and MSc and PhD degrees from Imperial College, University of London. As an IEEE Fellow, Dr. Vaahedi fulfills multiple roles for the IEEE. He is currently an Officer of the Power System Operation Committee and recently served as the Technical Chair of the IEEE 2013 PES General Meeting in Vancouver. He is an Adjunct Professor at the University of British Columbia and Sharif University of Technology. He has authored over 100 papers and won the IEEE PES Prize Paper award in 2004.
