About the Author
Maggie Baxter is an Australian artist, writer, independent curator, and public art coordinator. She has been a frequent visitor, particularly to Kutch, in Gujarat, where she maintains a textile arts practice that uses traditional textile techniques as media for contemporary art. She has exhibited regularly since 1984 in both group and solo exhibitions in Australia, India, Japan and UK. She held her first solo exhibition in India at the Visual Arts Gallery, India Habitat Centre in December 2004, for which she won their award for the Best Design and Craft Show 2004. In Australia she works primarily in the area of public art coordination managing a significant number of large-scale individual integrated artworks for major urban redevelopment projects.

As its title suggests "Unfolding: Contemporary Indian Textiles", written by Maggie Baxter, makes an insightful journey into the diverse Indian textile traditions with a lot of creative fusions by the contemporary textile designers - both resident Indians and non-resident Indians who made another country as their second home. The book is much about reinventing beauty of the traditional textiles while making them relevant to modern lives. Obviously, many of the contemporary textile designers acquire ideas from the contemporary world and produce a new series of textiles infused with innovation and creativity. Thus, through this book we get to know about revival and survival of India's traditional textiles and their weavers who make exotic pieces of artistic works. Many community-level civil society organizations are involved across India in revival of Indian textile traditions, as well as making these products contemporary and marketable. This book also makes us knowledgeable about the Surface, Texture, Minimalism, Narrative, and Crossover of the contemporary Indian textiles. This book offers a photo-documentation style of presentation with many anecdotes and author's professional and ethnographic observations. First off, I have read this book cover to cover. I have been practicing information security architecture and implementation for 10 years. I really liked the in-depth coverage of information security in general. The mapping of the Zachman Framework cells to the so-called SABSA framework is also impressive, but is simple enough to not warrant a whole chapter to be honest. But what is evident to me might not be so to the novice so I take nothing away from the author here.

However, I am very disappointed with this book from an application of methods standpoint. I was expecting so much more.
At the very least I expected some 'real-world' scenarios to be covered in some detail so the practitioner can use material, techniques presented in the book on the job. In several places, this book comes close to revealing the application of methodology being propounded under the trade name of SABSA but then fails to do so. Time and again, I turned over to the next page in anticipation but was left disappointed and exasperated! The author simply refers the reader to contact him for further details- well that's the point of reading the book isn't it? I bought this book for the details but left with an imitation of the Zachman Framework, which by the way is still more directly applicable to information security than SABSA in my most humble opinion. If I am wrong in having said that, it is because I did not learn how or why based on my reading of this book.

I still give it 4 because I like to round up from 3.5- there is too much good information here for the novice for me to rate it 3.

The definitive guide to SABSA. If you are looking for a practical and actionable security architecture then look no further. More attainable than ITIL, SABSA provides the framework for solving security practioners vision, governance, policy and procedure concerns. It is a heavy but worthwhile read. For the aspiring CISM or CGEIT I'd say this should absolutely be on your bookshelf.

A Plea for theee Preservation of Wild Places

Henry Williamson came home from World War One a damaged man. He withdrew to England's West Country and spent much of his time observing a small river and its inhabitants. An otter became his focus. I do not know personally if any of this is true, but that is the story.
The book he wrote about Tarka, a young male otter, is in many ways a painful document describing the risks and dangers of Tarka's life. There are many idyllic descriptions of the joyful fun of being an otter, but no happy endings here.
This summer I have been 'raising' a young raccoon. He is gradually being returned to an environment which includes a busy highway and angry people with guns. Observing him has been a huge delight for me, as I'm sure Tarka was to Williamson. Nature is cruel.

About the Author
As you may have noticed by now, Mark is a breed all his own. Some may call his style unconventional, and the rest would probably agree! Mark got his start as a business owner early in life. He was only 10 years old when he hit the streets with a bucket and some soap and began a weekly car wash service for his neighbors. That led to his first “real” job with a lawn maintenance company at age 14. Mark was a hard worker. One of Mark’s mottos is, “If it’s worth doing, then it is worth overdoing.” While this is not the balanced approach he takes with his clients now, it might explain his “achiever” mindset in everything he does. At 17 years old, he decided he was ready for some independence; he moved out and got his own apartment while finishing high school. He graduated high school Salutatorian. That is second out of his entire class. After high school, he did not slow down. Mark put himself through college while working as a self-employed tile contractor and purchased his first home when he was 21 years old. While on a tile job, Mark was scouted to become a model and worked in the US and Europe for about 8 years. He was on television, on magazine covers, and inside more catalogs than I can count. Seeing him on billboards was fun but odd. Following his time in Europe, he worked in sales and marketing with a new product development firm. Never one to let an opportunity pass him by, he left that lucrative position to earn his real estate license, become a loan officer, and travel with a real estate investment firm. When the real estate market crashed, Mark changed direction. He headed back to college to expand his accounting, bookkeeping, and tax preparation knowledge where he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Accountancy. So what does Mark do for fun? Aside from loving the fact that he is married to his best friend and business partner, he has the cutest daughter ever and three amazing stepsons. Mark loves life. He loves traveling and photography but cannot go more than a day or two without surfing. Mark loves to play tennis, or golf, or volleyball, or soccer, or ping pong, or pretty much any sport. Heck, he has even managed to make movie watching a sport. While not a big fan of reading, he still manages to read 1-2 hours a day. He works hard and plays hard, is abundantly humble, curiously intelligent, and savagely good-looking. If you are starting a business get this book!

I've been confused about how to start a business for years. I was a little skeptical when I was told this book would help me. It's was amazing how easy this book makes it. Within 30 minutes of reading I knew what I need to do for the type of business I have created. It really takes the confusion out and form a very clear outline for people who no nothing about starting up a business, like me...a guitar player.

Maybe there IS another way of winning

Balague's biography on Guardiola left me wondering if there really was another way of winning. The book barely gives any insights into Guardiola's mind perhaps as a testament to the Spaniard's reluctance to open up to the press. I would have expected a bit more comments on the subject itself from close relatives; comments or even anecdotes from important figures such as Bielsa, Begiristain or even FCB 'exes' Laporta or Rossell would have made an important contribution both historically as well as tactically to the book. I was left with a feeling that most of the research for this book came from two or three other books related to Barcelona and which the author refers to in his narrative. I am already through the first chapter on one of these books and I can't believe the amount of information that has been sourced, IMHO, from it. One funny story happened to me when I was looking for information to read about the Spaniard and the press was coming up with stories about Guardiola signing for a new club. An Italian sports broadcaster broke news that he had already signed for a German club (another FCB, LOL) and Balague's twitter account and blog page said specifically that he didn't, not yet, and that he needed time.
By the following week the German club confirmed not only that he was already on-board, but that he was signed months before. I guess that tells you how much the subject and his author worked together on this book.

Fantastic Read

This book gives fantastic insight to Guardiola & Barcelona. What they managed to achieve is nothing short of extraordinary and this boos gives intimate knowledge as to events going on behind the scenes that fans aren't typically aware of.

Kudos to the author and everyone that's a part of arguably the greatest football team in the history of the sport.

Fantastic read for ardent fan

I was so pleased to have purchased this one! I love Barcelona football, am a great admirer of Pep Guardiola and it was a delight to find out what went on behind the scenes. From never being a fan of Bayern Munich, I now watch some of their games and follow what's going on, all due to Pep! Thank you for a book that I couldn't put down.

Great adventure story

Award winning writer Kim Baldwin does it again. Taken by Storm is a well written and developed adventure novel with a strong shot of romance. Nicely developed strong characters who are challenged to grow through the story with well done secondary characters that are essential to the plot development. There is good treatment of the ramifications of climate change in the plot dev..Tons of knowledge about survival and climbing in challenging conditions just adds to the richness of the novel. Nice heat to top it off!

Another Exciting Read from this award winning author!

Taken By Storm is an exciting story of a scenic passenger train in the Swiss-Italian Alps which is buried by an avalanche. Baldwin does a great job of introducing the two main characters separately in their home settings. Steffi Graham is a librarian in a small town in Washington. She has never traveled out of the country before. Hudson Mead is an award winning reporter for the Associated Press. Steffi is traveling with her rock climbing club, while Hudson is traveling with her photographer. Both women are looking forward to a well earned vacation.
Baldwin beautifully increases the tension as the train passes through the heavy snow in the Alps. She raises the ante when the train is hit by an avalanche and plunges off the tracks and down into a gorge. The twenty-two survivors must work together, pooling their skills, food, and water so that all can survive. Their techniques for melting snow for water, dividing up what food they have, and helping the injured are told in detail, helping readers get to know the supporting characters. Kim Baldwin is a former CNN executive, and I really chuckled over the portrayal of a character from a less esteemed news station.
As food and water are running out, it becomes obvious that the survivors must do something to help rescue themselves. Hudson and Steffi are the best candidates for this, as they are fit, and Steffi has good rock climbing skills. This is where the story takes on more danger and drama, and where Steffi and Hudson must learn to trust each other.
If you're a fan of adventure, good characters, and a love story, Taken By Storm is for you! It has it all!

Taken everywhere and nowhere in the end

I've been going back and forth about whether this book is a 2 star or 3 star. I really wanted to like this book. Not only is it Baldwin's first novel on her own in several years, but the subject matter is right up my alley. I applaud any author who can create a profound, moving connection between characters who are literally fighting for their lives. Because let's face it, it's really hard to make romantic development between people believable when they haven't eaten in three days. Pyramid of concerns and all that. But after I finished it and really digested the work as a whole, I'm finding a lot more criticisms than positives. There are some spoilers ahead.

The main theme I'll probably keep coming back to in this long review is this book lacks identity. O Book, What Art Thou??! Are you adventure? Are you romance with adventure? Are you an in depth look into human survival-ism? Are you a study of like 18 different characters and how they all react to a tragic situation? It seems at times you are all these things and more, and frankly you aren't very good at any of them.

Let's start with the romance. There is nary a touch, hand hold, hug or even a sleeping situation until like 70% in! So if I'm stuck in a buried train not knowing whether or not I am even going to be alive by the end of the week, I'm throwing caution to the wind and spooning the hot chick in the tour group by night 2. For body warmth of course. There is just very little chemistry between Hudson and Steffi, in fact at one point in the story, they barely like each other. And even when they finally start having heart to heart conversations waaayyy late, it's almost clinical in the way it's done. There is one point where Hudson thinks she might really be digging Steffi and her thought is that "she'd faced down her fears and done an admirable job with the leadership role". That's about as romantic as my boss giving me my annual review. And don't expect it to all come together at the end in an explosion of undying love and mind-blowing sex that tickles your inner hopeless romantic funny bone. Not happening.

So let's move to character study in a tragedy. I swear, I started counting the secondary characters in this book and stopped sometime after 16. Steffi and her friend and partner, Hudson and the photographer, Hudson and the flat mate, Hudson and the boss, Kentucky guy, Anna, Curt and dead wife, Nick, J.T. and macho man crew, Swiss disaster boss, Swiss pilot, various Europeans, various Japanese. I mean chapters are sometimes devoted to these people, albeit short ones. Does anyone not think that is just too many?

For the adventure, survivalist part of this book, I wouldn't exactly call it edge of my seat. In fact, playing with my iPhone 6 was winning out more times in the what to do with my evening decision. And it's not that it was just boring, which much of the time it was, I feel like when too much is trying to be done, everything suffers from mediocrity. I will give Baldwin this, she knows her climbing. When Steffi and Hudson finally strike out to rescue the sorry lot, it starts getting a little more engaging. And they finally spoon in a snow cave.

As you can probably imagine with any lesfic with a natural disaster involved, there comes political agenda. But the political agendas sprinkled throughout this work lack originality or creativity. Most of it is just the same old spouting of the liberal environmentalist mantra we are inundated with in our daily lives. In fact, there is a thought expressed by one of the multitude of characters that global warming was the likely cause of the 50 or so nearly simultaneous avalanches that took place in several European countries. I'm sorry, but really? At least have him be watching some television where a scientist is giving some evidence for this. I'll suspend my disbelief of the simultaneous avalanches for you, but that statement to me is like saying I saw something flying in the air that wasn't a bird or a plane so it was most likely an alien spacecraft. And by the way, the 90s called, they want their "Global Warming" back. I believe the word of the day is "Climate Change".

And then there is J.T. As if it isn't enough that these people have endured multiple avalanches, lost loved ones, and sustained injuries, we need to introduce a villain? Agenda warning, who does he work for... why Fox News of course! J.T. is a somewhat ridiculous, conceited, hot head who later becomes a bit of a punching bag and I suppose some comedic relief element in the end. But with 15 other characters, why is he needed, what purpose does he serve, how does he help the overall theme and direction of the novel? Rhetorical questions.

In summary... I still love Hunter's Pursuit and Whitewater Rendezvous!!

Galaxy Dogs, Who Knew?

When pigs fly and dogs talk, you have a charming, rambunctious space rescue story in the style of The Little Prince, or the The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Offset by whimsical drawings by the author, the story careens between dangerous drones, the evil Wigdags, captive dog Skillet who is rescued just as the Wigdag's mighty psychofans are about to suck out her mind. All part of a highly readable, fun-and-fantasy filled canine odyssey. A story for all ages, including Miss Mordilla, the pig who "might be about seven hundred years old" but not in dog years. The story begins with the folkloric "once upon a time" and explains that the Brigands "were neither good not bad. They were just dogs." Not true--these dogs are storytellers, and this is a story you can't wait to read.

This story pulls you in and kids seem to relate to the characters like only kids can. How I wish kids around the world would read more about Skillet and his cast of characters instead of the highly productized Disney fare. The illustrations in this book have the rare ability to unlock the imagination of kids and adults alike. Great book. 5 stars.
