Comprehensive but a bit difficult to understand sometimes

I dabble in electronics as a hobby so a lot of times I will come across something with which I am unfamiliar. In those instances, a good reference is indispensable. I browsed this dictionary in a store once, and the entries I happened to look up were concise and thorough. However, it didn't seem worth the hundred dollars they were asking in the store (especially since the latest edition is over ten years old) so I picked it up on Amazon for about half that. After using it for a while I have discovered that some of the entries use language that is a bit technical for the hobbyist, but I can usually figure out what it is conveying if I think about it for a while, and perhaps cross-reference the material with another source like the Illustrated Encyclopedic Dictionary of Electronics by John Douglas-Young (which is written very clearly, but is much less comprehensive, with fewer entries, and is over twenty years old). I would actually give this book three and half stars. It's pretty good but not great.

This dictionary is compete, larg and concice. It covers all aspects of electronics and is quite humbling. No one person can know it all.

Questions for Dash Shaw on Bodyworld

Q: Bodyworld is about people who smoke a mysterious plant and can then read and feel each others’ thoughts. Where did you dream up that concept? Was there one event in particular that inspired it?
A: When I was in college I was really into figure drawing, and kept being involved in it after I graduated. When you’re drawing someone, part of it is imagining what it’s like to be inside of the person. You imagine yourself in their body, or look for a psychology in the kinds of poses they make or their face. I was also thinking about how to express how people think in comics, in ways outside of the normal thought balloons (which are just words). If you’re doing a book about telepathy, you’re really doing a book about how people think, and what it’s like to be inside of another person. So of course that leads to a strange, confusing, and funny, often goofy, story.

Q: Which character from Bodyworld was your favorite to dream up? Are any of them based on people in your life?
A: The main character, Paulie Panther, was the most fun for me. I think that shows on the page, especially during his interactions with some of the other characters, like Billy Borg. I can’t say that anyone was based on a specific, real person. The characters in Bodyworld are very stylized, cartoony, and unrealistic. I think they come more from my sense of humor than anything else.

Q: Which step (pencils, colors, etc.) is your favorite part of the drawing process?
A: For Bodyworld, it was the colors. I had done a lot of color comics before Bodyworld, but they were printed in grays because I didn’t know what I was doing. Color really freed me up. It was very playful. I work more unself-consciously in color, probably because for many years I was only interested in line drawing and black-and-white comics. It started to feel like my drawings were just an amalgamation of other people’s drawings, how someone else drew a hand or tree, but I didn’t have that baggage with color. The colors then helped my drawing, too. It’s hard to separate the different steps in Bodyworld, since all of the stages were integrated. It wasn’t like I did all of the drawings and then colored it. A lot of the pages moved back and forth between the drawing and the coloring stages. Because I don’t work inside of a system where I have to submit pencils, or ink a drawing and then color it--since I do everything--it allows me not to separate the stages in my mind.

Q: When did you know that cartooning was something you wanted to do full-time?
A: I always wanted to be a cartoonist, and have been doing comics all of my life. I’ve had a lot of friends who wanted to be cartoonists in high school and then stopped in college, and others who stopped after college. A lot of super-talented people stop. It’s a tragedy. I don’t know why I haven’t quit, but I think it’s because I enjoy it so much, while to others the cartooning process seems to be painful. It’s still fun for me. Comics aren’t something that you should want to procrastinate from doing, and they’re more fun to make than they are to read. It’s like a noncompetitive nonspectator sport. You have to keep at it; otherwise you get out of practice.

Q: David Mazzucchelli has called you "the future of comics." Where do you see comics heading in the future?
A: Right now in bookstores, all of the comics are grouped together: the reprints are right next to the contemporary comics, next to Marvel and DC, next to a nonfiction comic, etc. It’s as if you went into the book store and everything, all of it, was organized alphabetically. So I think what’ll happen in comics is that it’ll become more like other books, in that a Web cartoonist doesn’t necessarily read print comics, in the same way that some romance author doesn’t necessarily read the latest science fiction works. That’s already happening. But that’s unusual in comics. It’s usually been a small community. But, at the same time, I think there will be people who are viewing everything as a whole. So someone will like Robert Crumb, Otto Soglow, and Suehiro Maruo and then make comics that they’d want to read. Everything will move farther apart and also come closer together at the same time.

Q: What are your favorite graphic novels/comics? If you could name five comics that should be required reading, which would they be?
A: Answering that is too much pressure for me. I’m just going to suggest five comics that I read sort of recently, or are fresh on my mind, that I can recommend:

Starred Review. A fantastic follow-up to Shaw's widely praised first full-length graphic novel, 2008's Bottomless Bellybutton, Body World treads very different territory. Boney Borough is a pastoral planned community in a dystopic future, where everyone knows each other's names and young romance blossoms at the high school die-ball games. But like all idyllic suburban communities, Boney Borough has a drug problem, and a newcomer, tweaked-out drug researcher Paulie Panther, takes advantage of it. Panther discovers a new kind of plant in the woods outside town, that, when smoked, allows people to telepathically experience one another's bodies and minds. Introduced to the local youth, the drug wreaks havoc with Boney Borough in some very unusual ways. First published as a serial comic on the author's Web site, the print version has added scenes, with gorgeous full-color pages to be read from top to bottom, as if you were scrolling through the story from beginning to end. This is key for the climactic scene, which unfurls in one extended panel. Shaw's willingness to experiment with his drawing style pays off particularly in pages portraying the effects of the drug with abstract blurring and melding of images. Another brilliant work that is sure to attract loads of attention and praise this year. (Apr.)

*Starred Review* Shaw changes genre and tone from the not unplayful but serious realism of The Mother’s Mouth (2006) and Bottomless Belly Button (2008), folding sf and high-school romance into a grunge-noir continuum sprung from the ancient trope of the stranger coming to town. The burg in question is rigorously plotted (in a perfect square) Boney Borough, and the newcomer is Professor sic Paulie Panther, an experiential drug researcher (i.e., for all practical purposes, a professional addict). He comes to inspect a mysterious two-lobed plant growing on the local high-school campus and, as things unfold, to get involved (well, almost) with curvaceous teacher Jem Jewel and later with new grad Pearl Peach, whose athletic swain, Billy-Bob Borg, is already dismayed at her dumping him. If all those alliterative names don’t immediately give it away, the first few pages clarify that this is a black comedy on the lines of 1980s cult film Repo Man, which it most directly resembles in its space-alien conspiracy (the plant’s a Trojan horse) that never physically breaches the plot’s surface (the aliens never appear). Deploying color seemingly pasted-in � la hip 1950s advertising and UPA cartoons (especially impressive in scenes distorted by the plant’s mind-and-body-melding effects) to his trademark art-brut-meets-computer-animation drawing style (his protagonist’s name is probably a tip of the hat to stylistic forebear Gary Panter), Shaw shows himself as adept at dire comedy as he is with midlife and family crises. --Ray Olson

Surprisingly Thought Provoking !

I picked this up on a lark, sight unseen, knowing only one short piece of one of the author's previous works. Starting off as what seems like a punk-hipster world view of the future, full of sarcasm and commercialism critique, ends up being a sci-fi mindtrip with inventive presentation through the medium of comics. I was quite surprised by the concept as I got deeper into the story. A lot to think about after you finish! I did not care for the ending, there were deeper areas for exploration left undeveloped. However, what started out frivilous ended up being a book with real value and, perhaps consciousness expansion. Well worth your time.

Strange Interesting Book

I had previously read the first few chapters of Bodyworld online, but after hearing about the print edition I decided to wait for the rest. I'm glad I did, the book is gorgeous. The vertical binding is a nice touch, imitating the reading scroll from the online version. The colors pop off the page and the fold out maps are a really cool feature. Check this out if you liked the Unclothed Man or Bottomless Belly Button.

weirdness, mind blowing drugsstranhe pictures

lots of weird drugs and surreal drama.
strange drawing style. if you liked Asterios Polyp this one is as much strange as that one.
you can see this free on authors pages but then you will decide to buy it anyway like me.
Mazzucchelli even described it as "future of comics".... and he was right.
totally mind blowing. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

I couldn't believe my eyes!

This particular book is a collector's item now. You can still get Mr. Ross' other books in the series, but not this one. As time went by his books got better with instructions on how to paint the pictures that are inside, but to have the complete set was quite a happy surprise for me. Thank you amazon.com for having so many of the things I have a hard time finding. Even though it was used, it was in great condition.

He is the author of approximately 70 articles appearing in the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Journal of Banking and Finance, Journal of Fixed Income, and others. Further, he the co-author of An Introduction to Derivatives and Risk and Risk Management (Seventh, Eighth, and Ninth Editions) with Don Chance and has authored a book titled Building Financial Derivatives Applications with C++. Bob has been quoted in The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg News and The Bond Buyer as well as testifying at a subcommittee hearing of the U. S. House of Representatives in Washington, D.C. and testifying at a field hearing of the SEC in Birmingham, Alabama. Excellent blend of programming and derivatives knowledge

There are many books on financial risk management and many books on programming but not many books that intersect these two areas. This substantially updated version of a previous book is indeed the intersection. The author begins by making a solid case for the fact that understanding derivatives and risk management requires getting one's hands dirty with programming. It then proceeds in a methodical manner to teach the reader how to program virtually all of the major applications in derivatives and risk management using C++. While a book like this is not one to sit down with and read like a novel or even a work of non-fiction, I read enough of it to get a sense that it reads well. Yes, I am biased, because he and I co-authored a book together. Nonetheless, I was amazed at how much I enjoyed reading through a programming book. There is a lot to learn here that goes beyond programming in C++. I also applaud the author for taking advantage of Amazon's self-publishing feature. If you didn't know it, you would not be able to tell that a major publishing company's name is not on this book. I hope this book is successful. The big-name publishers could use a little competition. If you want to know about programming derivatives and risk management models, surely this book belongs on your shelf. Better yet, it belongs on your desk.

This book delivers the goods

I really like the presentation and content of this book. The philosophy section is a nice touch; a little bit of much-needed humanity amidst the math and computer code. I was a TA for the Computational Finance course at UChicago, and I really wish we had this book for that course. The book delivers code, and plenty of it -- plus just enough supporting theory and C++ concepts.

Good not only for those older than 50

While the ideas in this book are good ideas, it also sounds like too much work to do for someone who is retired and just wants to relax. Not only that, but they require you to be tech savvy, thereby making it beyond impossible for me to recommend this book to people I know who could use it. None of them are very tech savvy!

However, if you ARE tech savvy enough to follow the ideas and advice in this book, then I say go for it. I'm not that age myself but I work-at-home, and was pondering what outlets there are available to make some extra money, and the ideas in this book did help me a lot. So, I also recommend this book as a guide to making extra money, if you need it.

Though I would really love to get rich soon, you can never be too sure, so I am also reading about books like this one - getting rich after 50. I need to have plan B just in case. This book offered different tips on how to get rich after you reach the age of 50 without working as hard. For many, that might come out to be too difficult, but with a book like as your guide, you will definitely be able to plan something out. There are various tips in here and I particularly can make use of some of them even at my current age. I particularly favor the online methods since my line of work is somewhat online as well. This is a book that I can share with my parents.

She always tells me that she might not have "enough" to spend in the the coming years and that she wanted to work again as part-time tutorial so she may have extra money to spend with. Back Doctor, goodbye back pain...

What I remember liking the most, are his various explanations of back pain, how most of us get it, what we can do to get rid of fit, and most important - how to avoid it.
He also puts plain words on all the Chiro/etc techno-talk and what it all boils down to.
I read it over 5 years ago - haven't seen a chiro since. Have I been without any pain - no. But the bouts are few & far between + I know what to do - and it's never so bad I must stay in bed or sitting all day long.
I had been going to chiros for over 20 years and they had never been able to resolve it. (The last one was actually very nice - and did give me some decent guidlines - which all others before had failed to do).
I don't remember if he says it these words, but modern back pain is a combo of several things : mainly inactivity, weight problems and bad sitting habits. Our backs are precious - we should take better care of them.

An excellent book - I recommend it to all my friends.

I've had two episodes where I was flat on my back with a herniated disc for an entire month. This book explains how your back works and how to take care of it. It's easy reading. It's clear, concise and useful. I've given copies to family and friends and would recommend it to anyone.

The Back Doctor

This was a good book for someone with advanced back pain who will need the help of a surgeon to deal with it. Surgical intervention is not always the solution to back problems, though, and many times a good osteopathic doctor can deal with many of the other back problems people do have. This book was written by a doctor who saw many of the same problems over and over, and decided to write a book to help his patients, and many others, with the many questions they have about their back problems. It gives the reader a good place to start trying to decribe their problem and ask their doctor the right questions needed to address their issues.

Verity Harte is Professor of Philosophy and Classics at Yale University, where she teaches ancient philosophy. She is the author of Plato on Parts and Wholes: The Metaphysics of Structure (2002) and co-editor of Aristotle and the Stoics Reading Plato (2010), as well as various articles in ancient philosophy. From 2003 to 2011, she was the Managing Editor of leading ancient philosophy journal, Phronesis.

Melissa Lane is Professor of Politics at Princeton University, where she teaches political theory with a specialization in the thought of ancient Greece. About the Author

Charlie Kaufman previously collaborated with director Spike Jonze on Being John Malkovich, which was nominated for the Academy Award� for Best Screenplay. Kaufman's other scripts include Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Human Nature, and Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.

Worth it just for the introduction

"Being John Malkovich" is one of the most insanely creative films ever made,and a large portion of the credit for that goes to Charli Kaufman's moody,intimate,and sly script,presented here in pretty much the same form as it is in the finished film.Which is great,but on top of that you get,a stellar,caustic introduction in which the author is told to say a few words to the readers,beacause the readers are"owed...something"."I said I would try" replys our intrepid narrator,and what follows is a darkly hilarious trip through his mind as he tries to come up with something insightful or inspirational to say,all the while revealing his self-loathing and profound contempt.In the end, the best he can manage to come up with is "And if you're going to write a screenplay,try to keep it around one hundred and ten pages".Which when you think about it,is probably the most practical advice he could give.

Kaufmanian self-loathing triumphant

The real bonus here is Kaufman's intro--which, rather than explicating the writing or making of this movie, is an anguished, hysterical, can't-take-it-any-more Dance of Despair and Disillusionment that will brighten the day of any struggling scribe. "Wow!" one thinks, avidly turning the pages, "Charlie Kaufman waited five years, got the huge payoff, had a critical and commercial hit...and he's still absolutely bananas! God bless America!"
Los Angeles writers will especially enjoy the part about making friends with the take-out bags left on the floor of one's ever-more-apartment-like car.
Kaufman's growth proceeds apace: his new script ADAPTATION is like a feature-length expansion of his intro here. You've just got to love a guy who's an addled mess and doesn't try to whittle it into a cutesy Woody Allen persona. He's just cuckoo!

For the first time, I'm disappointed in a Newmarket Press Shooting Script

This book arrived today. I cracked open the box, brewed a fresh pot of coffee and eased back to give this screenplay a read. And I can honestly say, for the first time, I'm disappointed in a "Newmarket Press Shooting Script Series" book.

The reason I buy Newmarket Press books is because the screenplays are always in proper screenplay type and format. This book is not. It's an exact reprint of the "Faber and Faber" movie tie-in screenplay published in eleven years ago. A glance at the copyright page confirms this. The screenplay is published in Times New Roman, not Courier as in most other Newmarket Press screenplays.

That's not why I buy Newmarket Press "The Shooting Script" series of books. If I wanted the movie tie-in book published in non-screenplay format, which is still available here, I'd buy it.

Very disappointed.
