About the Author

David W. McCurdy has been a professor of Anthropology at Macalester since 1966, acting as chair of the department for extended periods since 1969. He was the first recipient of the American Anthropological Association/ Mayfield Award for Undergraduate Teaching (1997), and he was the subject of an article in 1977 by Change Magazine for innovative teaching in anthropology. Professor McCurdy received a B.A. from Cornell University in 1957, a Masters in Anthropology from Stanford University in 1959, and a Ph.D. in Anthropology from Cornell Univeristy in 1964.

He completed a major ethnography (1961-1963), then restudy (1985, 1991, 1994) of a Bhil tribal community in Rajasthan, India. He has also conducted a cross-cultural study of spirit possession (1966-1967). His ethnographic studies have examined corporate managers (1983), stockbrokers (1980), Jehovah witnesses (1973), as well as members of an environment movement (1968-1969). He has also performed continued ethnography (1988-1999) on a national motorcycle association.

Dianna Shandy is Professor of Anthropology at Macalester College, where she has been teaching since 1999. She earned a Ph.D. and Masters in Anthropology at Columbia University and a B.S. in Languages and Linguistics with Certificates in African Studies and Russian Area Studies at Georgetown University. Her work spans U.S. and international settings, with broad research and teaching interests in gender, migration, political conflict and violence, and research methods. Specific research projects have explored college-educated women negotiating work and family in the United States, African asylum seekers in Ireland, and the Nuer (South Sudanese) diaspora.

James Spradley was a professor of Anthropology at Macalester College from 1962 until his passing in 1982. He was a prolific author who wrote or edited 20 books in 12 years. He made especially notable contributions to the literature on ethnography and qualitative research.

About the Author
Jon Schreibfeder is president of Effective Inventory Management, Inc., a firm dedicated to helping manufacturers, distributors, and large retailers get the most out of their investment in stock inventory. What's new in the 11th edition

These are the differences between the 10th and 11th editions:

* Five new biographical vignettes of prominent logicians are introduced. The new logicians include Ruth Barcan Marcus, Alice Ambrose, Ada Byron (Countess of Lovelace), Willard Van Orman Quine, and Saul Kripke.
* Six new dialogue exercises are introduced to help affirm the relevance of formal logic to real-life. They can be found in Sections 5.6, 6.4, 6.6, 7.3, 7.4, and 8.2.
* The end-of-chapter summaries now appear in bullet format to make them more useful for student review.
* Many new and improved exercises and examples appear throughout the book.
* In Section 1.4, the link between inductive reasoning and the principle of the uniformity of nature is explained. Cogent inductive arguments are those that accord with this principle, while weak ones violate it. Such violations are always accompanied by an element of surprise.
* The connection between the Boolean Standpoint and the Aristotelian standpoint is explained more completely.
* The existential fallacy as it occurs in immediate inferences is explained in greater detail. All inferences that commit this fallacy have a universal premise and a particular conclusion. The meaning of "universal" and "particular" are extended to cover statements that are given as false.
* A new exercise set is introduced in Section 4.5 that involves testing immediate inferences for soundness.
* An improved definition of the "main operator" of a compound statement is given.
* A new subsection is introduced in Section 6.5 giving preliminary instruction on how to work backward from the truth values of the simple propositions to the truth values of the operators. A new exercise set provides practice with this technique.
* Section 7.1 has been rewritten, emphasizing the strategy of trying to "find" the conclusion in the premises.
* Margin of error in Chapter 12 is now explained in terms of level of expectation. A more informative table illustrates this change.

Doesn't seem to be a simple rerelease with chapters mixed around to appease the greedy publisher. So if your teacher requests the 11th, you're pretty much stuck dishing out $130 unless you're more resourceful.

A thorough logic text

I have used Hurley's logic text for nearly twenty years in the classes that I have taught. I've compared his text with various of the other standard introductions. None is better or more complete. Moreover, because it contains such a wide variety of material (from informal fallacies to categorical propositions and syllogisms, from propositional to predicate logic, from analogical reasoning to probability and statistical reasoning), it can be used in a variety of logic courses. I have used it as a text in both critical thinking and modern logic courses. (This gives the student who takes both of these courses the advantage of not having to buy two textbooks.)

Another good feature is that the text does not vary greatly from one edition to the next. The changes are for the most part confined to improvements and clarifications of specific points. Unlike some textbooks I have used in other courses (especially in applied ethics) the widespread changes that some publishers make from one edition to the next simply to ensure that a previous edition is unusable are absent. Students in my classes who use the immediately previous edition are at no disadvantage.

Does this mean Hurley's book is perfect? No, it doesn't. There are a few things he says with which I disagree. But they are all on minor points. Moreover, the last chapter, "Science and Superstition" (Chapter 14), tends to get a bit preachy. However, one can simply avoid this chapter if one doesn't like it. (Anyhow, there's far more content in the book than can possibly be covered in a single semester.)

For those looking for a textbook to adopt for a course or for anyone interested in learning logic on his or her own, I highly recommend this book.

Logic Textbook Needs No Logic

Normally it's not even worth writing a review for a textbook because the people who buy it don't have a choice (as in my case, where it was the assigned reading). That said, for the pure cathartic value of venting my spleen, I have to say this is one of the worst textbooks I have ever read. I was taking an online class for Logic and, for what it's worth, ended up getting an A in it, no thanks to this book.

The book is poorly written, to begin with; it often says "X is Y except in this case, which we'll talk about later..." to the point that you wonder what on earth the point of writing it was anyway. If I tried to follow all of the diversions, I would have blacked out and woke up talking to a smoking caterpillar.

The exercises were ridiculous. The ones that were shown in the book were the equivalent of "1+2 = 3" and then from that, they expected you to do calculus equations on your own. After all, they showed you the basics, right? Of course, in some cases, they didn't even show you the baby's first math question. One of my assignments had us do the exercise, which included doing an indirect truth table. After about 50 tries, I appealed to the internet and my brother for help. Apparently you were supposed to do a "branching" truth table because no definitive truth values could be found - did the book explain what a branching table was? How to do it? That you were supposed to do it? Nope!

Or there were the times that the answers listed in the back of the book were plain wrong. I did one and was baffled at how I was supposed to get one answer. I sent an email to my professor, who informed me that no, the book's answer was wrong. This happened numerous times.

My professor himself referred to this as "that cursed, abysmal textbook", and I agree. This is awful.

The only thing it would be useful for is teaching advanced logic students how not to write a logic textbook. Or having them point out all the errors in it.

If you are, for some reason, not compelled to buy this particular textbook and are instead just searching for an intro to logic textbook, choose anything else; it has to be better than this.

This is an awesome book. It's like having an attorney by your side to walk you through Due Process. There are Draft forms in this book are great. If you are considering filing Due Process against your school district, read this book first!

Extremely helpful

Extremely helpful. Well organized. Buy it more affordably as an instant download ebook on the author's website (just google her).

Also, if you are going to due process pro se, another helpful guide may be found at the Pennsylvania Office for Dispute Resolution website (just google it). The Philpot guide is more concise but if you are really going to due process you may feel better if you take a look at the PA guide as well. Note, the PA guide is very specific to PA and is less concise than Philpot.

In short, I would always recommend starting with the Philpot guide.

P. S. Philpot helps you prepare in a lot of practical ways. One thing I particularly appreciated was, she warns you what sorts of new tricks your district might pull in the last couple of weeks before the hearing, and she gives you the gumption to stop playing nice.

Megadeth fans should read this

If you are a fan of Megadeth this is an eye opening "tell all" book that you should read. It basically affirms the sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll life style of mega rock stars, and in the process gives us a peek into the psyche of Dave Mustaine at various points in his career.

My only criticism of the book is not about what was written, but about what I wish was written. I was hoping there would be more space in the book devoted to the creative process Dave Mustaine has used to write the amazing catalog of Megadeth music, but unfortunately there is only a tiny fraction of the book devoted to this topic.

A compelling personal story that grips you for the entirety of the crazy ride, but leaves you satisfied!

If you are interested in first hand accounts of the rock and roll lifestyle, stories of personal growth and victory, humorous anecdotes, or all of the above, this book won't disappoint!

Dave Mustaine is someone I've admired for a long, time - about 20 years. And just like everything else changes in life, my reasons for admiring him changed and grew as he changed and grew. As a teenager, I latched on to the intensity and energy of Rust In Peace and I never let go of my admiration for Mustaine. Through changes in musical direction and band members, frequent drug relapses, an ongoing feud with another band I like (Metallica), etc., I continued to follow, and support (by purchasing CDs and concert tickets) Dave Mustaine and Megadeth. You could say I was a loyal fan. Dedicated in my support. Perhaps even tenacious. And tenacity is one big reason why I admire Dave Mustaine so much. He has accumulated a lifetime of reasons to give up, spiral into an empty, bitter life or simply be dead already. But he's not. He's still here and this is his personal story of second chances, third chances, strife, success and redemption.

Being a fan of Megadeth, I was at least generally familiar with Mustaine's history; so I guess not much of the book surprised me. If you want to paint with very broad brush strokes, you sum up his life story as not dissimilar from many other rock stars. Sex, drugs, and rock and roll - right? But throughout the book, you get this feeling that all the sensational and sometimes caricature-like anecdotes are being shared by someone who is in a better place now - someone who is wise only in the way that *he* can be, because he has learned from the experiences that only *he* has lived. Mustaine's story is a personal story that you can relate to. Even if you've never played a guitar or smoked heroin.

I had the opportunity to meet him briefly in 2001 and again for a little bit longer while in the studio in 2003. When he sat down next to me and asked me "so what's up?" All I could think to myself was "what's up is your Dave Frickin' Mustaine and I'm a nervous fan who's more starstruck than I thought I would be in this situation". But I wasn't just starstruck by my admiration for his musical ability, nor his music business savvy, nor the fact that he seemed to have a great, healthy family, nor even exclusively his tenacity. It was the fact that this guy was simultaneously a success and a failure - he knows what it is like to be truly human. He had often been a bad example as a person who wasn't the easiest to get along with, yet he has in him this inherent good side, a humble side - a vulnerable side, even, that is very refreshing. Considering I can't relate to probably 95% of Mustaine's life experiences, I feel that he is still a completely 100% relatable guy. To me, this autobiography reaffirms my conviction in our shared humanity and reaffirms my faith in God.

All in all a good read but it does really drag in some sections

Overall a good, fast paced read. Two things really start to drag the book down- first is the well told story of Dave being fired by Metallica. It is obvious that he's never gotten over that rejection and his repeated run ins with members of the band are told with a sense of desperate yearning for acceptance that is in complete contrast from the persona in much of the rest of the book. One the one hand, this is an interesting insight into Dave's psyche- the fragility that lies just beneath the surface, on the other hand it can come across as the whining of a guy that contributed to three songs 30 years ago and like Uncle Rico in Napoleon Dynamite just can't stop living in the past. The second is Dave's finding religion. Its almost as though he is trying to rationalize his decision to himself and it really weighs heavily on the last bit of the book. I hate to focus too much on those two items though as all in all it is a classic memoir of heavy metal mayhem and is certainly worth a read for fans of Megadeth or metal in general.
