It also examines the strengths and weaknesses of these psychological interpretations (five Freudian and six Jungian) of the Eros and Psyche myth in order to lay the groundwork for an interpretation which (1) avoids the rigidity of both Freudian and Jungian dogma and (2) restores the myth to its rightful literary and religious context ― something which has been ignored by most psychological interpretations.

About the Author
Dr. Gollnick taught at the University of Toronto for over twenty years and now teaches at St. Paul’s College at the University of Waterloo. He has a private practice in psychotherapy and has written previous books on Anselm of Canterbury and dream interpretation in the psychology of religion. His main areas of research are dream analysis and the psychology of religion.

I also found Martin Lowenthal's Alchemy and the Soul to be a good book on the subject

If you are writing a paper on Eros and Psyche, the book would be advantageous. Golnick summarizes perspectives from both the Freudian and Jungian camps. I got my book for $33, including shipping, from the publisher, so don't pay the extortionist prices anywhere else. It took just over two weeks for it to arrive in the US from Canada. Golnick bookends the psychological perspectives by stating that those views are too narrow and the Eros/Psyche story should be examined in the context of the entirety of the Golden Ass and how it relates to the main character Lucius (literary criticism). So, if you are just simply interested in the story of Eros and Psyche and how it applies to your life, get a copy of Metamorphoses/The Golden Ass instead. I also found Martin Lowenthal's Alchemy and the Soul to be a good book on the subject.
